Neonatal Life Support: Intubation and Special Considerations
Compromised neonates requiring more than routine care must be resuscitated to establish oxygenation. Interruption in oxygenation at birth can result in long-term organ damage or death. Prior to delivery, skilled healthcare providers should anticipate and prepare for neonates who may need complicated resuscitation. Accordingly, every birth should be prepared for resuscitation. The information presented is based on the 2021 American Heart Association (AHA) and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidelines for neonatal resuscitation; the Neonatal Resuscitation Program® (NRP).

Supporting Parents of Children with Special Healthcare Needs

Approximately 20% of all children in the U.S. have a qualifying condition classified as a special healthcare need (Young & Crankshaw, 2021). The term “special healthcare needs” is often interchanged with the term “disabilities.” This course will interchange the terms. Caring for a child with special healthcare needs is a full-time job for the parents and continues throughout the child’s life. Nurses and social workers are in a unique position to facilitate family coping, navigating complex medical care access and barriers, and being the conduit between the professional healthcare and outside community.

Pertussis: Diagnosis and Treatment
Pertussis, also known as “whooping cough,” is a vaccine-preventable disease that has experienced a resurgence since the 1980s (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2022b). It is likely that only a small number of pertussis cases are recognized and reported with the real incidence likely much higher. Rates reported may be up to 160 times less than the actual amount of disease with asymptomatic rates up to 22 times more prevalent than symptomatic infections (Cherry, 2016).

Clinicians and educators have a role in the prevention of pertussis through patient education and immunization programs. Clinicians and educators must inform patients that neither vaccination nor infection guarantees life-long protection from pertussis. Previously vaccinated adults and adolescents with mild or subclinical disease are a reservoir of infection and often are the cause of infection in infants and children.
