An Update on Cancer

Cancer is the second-leading cause of death in the U.S. behind heart disease (Siegel et al., 2022). The exact number of new cancer diagnoses is unknown for several reasons, including incomplete cancer registration data for some states and a lag in available statistics, but the American Cancer Society (ACS) projected that more than 1,918,030 new cancer cases would occur in the U.S. in 2022 (Siegel et al., 2022). According to the ACS, about 609,360 patients will die from cancer in the U.S. in 2022 (Siegel et al., 2022). The National Cancer Institute (NCI) reports the most common cancers were breast, lung and bronchus, prostate, and colorectal cancers (NCI, 2020). The rates of mortality for common cancer types showed a decline between 2015 and 2019 (NCI, 2021a). About 80% of cancers diagnosed in the U.S. occur in patients over the age of 55 (American Cancer Society, 2022c).

von Willebrand Disease: An Inherited Bleeding Disorder

Von Willebrand disease (vWD) is the most common inherited genetic bleeding disorder, yet it is not well known or understood among the public or healthcare providers. Von Willebrand factor (vWF) is a protein that is essential for platelet aggregation and clotting. A low vWF can lead to heavy or prolonged bleeding. This most commonly appears as complaints of menorrhagia (i.e., heavy menstrual bleeding), prolonged bleeding after minor injuries, or gum bleeding. The clinician can advocate for proper diagnosis and treatment, as well as prevent adverse events by being aware of the presenting signs and types of the disorder, recognizing that many patients are asymptomatic, and understanding when a hematology consultation is warranted.

Preventing Blood Incompatibility Errors

Transfusions are a life-saving intervention, but transfusion errors, particularly errors involving ABO incompatibility, can be deadly. Three actions that have frequently been a contributing cause for ABO incompatibility errors are incorrect labeling of the blood sample for crossmatching, incorrect interpretation by personnel in the blood bank, and incorrect identification of the patient prior to initiation of a transfusion. Laboratory staff and nurses who are involved in the administration of blood products must strictly follow facility policies to ensure that they give the correct blood product to the correct patient.

Common Misconceptions About Cancer Pain
Many patients with cancer experience pain at some point. Interprofessional collaboration by the healthcare team helps alleviate suffering by increasing knowledge about cancer pain and the application of effective pain management interventions. Multimodal therapy can include medication as well as complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) being applied synergistically to provide relief.

Despite increased research, knowledge gaps persist related to standards for quality pain assessment and management of complex and combined pain states. Confusion still exists over the differences between addiction and tolerance. Undertreatment of cancer pain can leave many survivors with chronic pain issues.
