Understanding the renewal cycle

In Virginia, LPN licenses expire biennially based on your birth year:

  • Even-numbered birth years: Renew by the last day of your birth month in even-numbered years.
  • Odd-numbered birth years: Renew by the last day of your birth month in odd-numbered years.

The Virginia Department of Health Professions (DHP) typically sends renewal notices approximately 60 days before your license expires. These notices include a Personal Identification Number (PIN) required for online renewal. However, it's your responsibility to renew your license before the expiration date to avoid any lapse in your ability to practice.

Renewal requirements

To renew your Virginia LPN license, you must:

  1. Submit a renewal application: Complete the online renewal process through the Virginia DHP Online Licensing system.
  2. Pay the renewal fee: The renewal fee for an LPN license in Virginia is $120.
  3. Meet continued competency requirements: Fulfill at least one of the continued competency activities during each renewal cycle.

Continued competency requirements

Virginia LPNs must complete at least one of the following activities for renewal:

  1. Current specialty certification: By a national certifying organization.
  2. Post-licensure academic education: Minimum of three credit hours relevant to nursing practice from a regionally accredited college or university.
  3. Board-approved refresher course: In nursing.
  4. Nursing-related research or publication: Completing an evidence-based practice project, research study, or publication as author or co-author.
  5. Teaching or developing a nursing-related course: Resulting in at least three semester hours of college credit, a 15-week course, or specialty certification.
  6. Teaching or developing continuing education courses: Up to 30 contact hours.
  7. Workshops, seminars, conferences, or courses:
    1. Fifteen contact hours relevant to nursing practice and 640 hours of active nursing practice,
    2. Or 30 contact hours relevant to nursing practice.

These activities help LPNs maintain competence and stay updated with advancements in nursing practice.

Timelines and important dates

  • Renewal period: Opens approximately 60 days before your license expiration date. Begin the process as soon as the renewal period opens to make sure all requirements are met and to avoid any last-minute issues.
  • Expiration date: Your license expires on the last day of your birth month in odd or even-numbered years, depending on your birth year. Practicing with an expired license is illegal and may result in disciplinary action.

Steps to renew your license

  1. Access the online licensing system: Log in or register at the Virginia DHP Online Licensing system.
  2. Complete the renewal application: Update personal information and complete all required sections accurately.
  3. Pay the renewal fee: Use a credit or debit card to pay the $120 fee.
  4. Verify continued competency compliance: Attest to completing the required activities and retain documentation for two years following renewal.

Renewal fees

  • Standard renewal fee: $120 for biennial renewal.

Late renewal and reinstatement

  • Late renewal: If you fail to renew by the expiration date, your license will lapse. Practicing nursing when a license has lapsed is considered illegal and may subject you to prosecution.
  • Reinstatement: If your license has lapsed, you must apply for reinstatement, which may involve additional fees and meeting current licensing requirements.

Verification of license status

You can verify your license status through the Virginia DHP's online verification system. This tool confirms your license's current status and expiration date.

Keeping track of continued competency records

Maintain records of your continued competency activities, including certificates of completion and other documentation, for at least two years following renewal. This documentation is essential if you're selected for an audit by the Virginia Board of Nursing.

Tips for a smooth renewal process

  • Start early: Begin the renewal process as soon as the renewal period opens to ensure all steps are completed on time.
  • Stay organized: Keep personal information current and maintain records of all continued competency activities and related documentation.
  • Use the online system: The Virginia DHP Online Licensing system offers a streamlined renewal process. Ensure you have access and are familiar with the system before your renewal period.
  • Monitor communications: Regularly check your email for updates or notifications regarding your license from the Virginia Board of Nursing.

Adhering to these guidelines and staying proactive contributes to a seamless renewal of your Virginia LPN license, allowing you to continue your nursing practice without interruption.
