CE Requirements for Hawaii RNs

  • In Hawaii, RNs are required to complete 30 contact hours of continuing education every two years.

These hours must be obtained through activities provided by an approved or accredited CE provider such as Nurse.com. The Hawaii Board of Nursing accepts courses offered by providers that are approved by recognized accrediting bodies such as the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Medical Association (AMA).

CE activities should be relevant to nursing and can include a wide array of topics aimed at enhancing professional skills and knowledge. Nurses are encouraged to pursue education that aligns with their clinical responsibilities and areas of specialization.

License renewal process

The process for renewing a nursing license in Hawaii is fully online through the MyPVL system on the Professional and Vocational Licensing (PVL) website. Here’s how RNs can renew their licenses:

  1. Access the MyPVL portal: Nurses should log into their account on the MyPVL website.
  2. Complete the renewal application: This involves updating personal and professional details, attesting to the completion of the required CE hours, and responding to health and legal disclosures.
  3. Pay the renewal fee: The fee for RN license renewal in Hawaii is $196.

Nurses must retain their CE certificates or records for at least four years as they may be asked to provide these if audited by the Board.

Timelines and important dates

  • Nursing licenses in Hawaii must be renewed biennially by June 30th of each odd-numbered year.

To avoid any disruption in licensure, RNs are advised to complete their CE requirements and submit their renewal applications well in advance of this deadline. Although the Board may send renewal reminders, it is ultimately the responsibility of each nurse to ensure their license is renewed on time.

Continuing education is vital for RNs in Hawaii, helping them maintain proficiency and deliver the highest standard of care. By fulfilling their CE requirements, nurses not only comply with regulatory requirements but also contribute to their professional growth and the health of their communities.

Timely and thorough planning for CE activities and license renewal is crucial to avoid any gaps in licensure, enabling nurses in Hawaii to continue their important role in the healthcare system without interruption.
