Understanding the renewal cycle

In Ohio, LPN licenses expire biennially on October 31 of even-numbered years. The renewal cycle begins on July 1 and ends on October 31. To avoid a late fee, it's advisable to renew your license before September 15. Renewing between September 16 and October 31 incurs a late fee. If you don’t renew by October 31, your license will expire on November 1, and you won’t be authorized to practice as an LPN until your license is reinstated.

Renewal requirements

To renew your Ohio LPN license, you must:

  • Submit a renewal application. Complete the online renewal process through the Ohio eLicense system.
  • Pay the renewal fee. The renewal fee is $65 if renewed on or before September 15.
  • Complete CE requirements. Fulfill the CE requirements as specified by the Ohio Board of Nursing (OBN).

CE Requirements

Ohio requires LPNs to complete 24 contact hours of CE during each licensure period. This must include at least one contact hour of Category A, which covers the Ohio Nurse Practice Act and the administrative rules of the OBN. CE in Category A must be approved by an OBN approver or administered by an OBN-approved provider unit headquartered in Ohio. If this is your first renewal after obtaining your license by examination, you aren’t required to complete any CE contact hours for this renewal.

Timelines and important dates

  • Renewal period: The renewal period occurs from July 1 to October 31 of even-numbered years.
  • Late renewal period: The late renewal period is September 16 to October 31.
  • License lapse: If not renewed by October 31, the license lapses on November 1, and you must apply for reinstatement to resume practice.

Submitting the renewal application

To renew your license:

  1. Access the Ohio eLicense system. Log in or register at https://elicense.ohio.gov/OH_CommunitiesLogin.
  2. Complete the renewal application. Update your personal information and answer all required questions.
  3. Pay the renewal fee. Follow the online instructions to complete payment using a Mastercard, VISA, or Discover credit or debit card. Prepaid cards may also be used.
  4. Attest to CE completion. You must confirm on your application that you’ve met or will meet the CE requirement by October 31. Don’t send any CE documents to the OBN; however, you’re required to keep your CE documentation for at least six years.

Renewal fees

  • Renewal fee: The renewal fee is $65 if renewed on or before September 15.
  • Late renewal fee: If your license is renewed between September 16 and October 31, you’ll be charged a late renewal fee of $115, which includes a $50 late fee.
  • Transaction fee: An additional $3.50 applies to all renewals.

Late renewal and reinstatement

If you don’t renew by October 31, your license will lapse on November 1. You won’t be authorized to practice as an LPN until your license is reinstated. To reinstate your license, you must apply through the Ohio eLicense system and meet all reinstatement requirements.

Verification of license status

You can verify your license status through the OBN’s verification service at https://elicense.ohio.gov/oh_verifylicense. This tool confirms your license's status and expiration date.

Keeping track of CE records

Maintain records of your CE activities, including certificates of completion, for at least six years after the renewal period. This documentation is essential if you're selected for a CE audit by the OBN.

Tips for a smooth renewal process

  • Start early. Begin the renewal process as soon as the renewal period opens to ensure all steps are completed on time.
  • Stay organized. Keep personal information up to date and maintain records of all CE activities and related documentation.
  • Use the online portal. The Ohio eLicense system offers a streamlined renewal process.
  • Monitor communications. Regularly check your email and the OBN website for updates or notifications regarding your license.

By adhering to these guidelines and staying proactive, ensure a seamless renewal of your Ohio LPN license, allowing you to continue your nursing practice without interruption.
