Understanding the renewal cycle

In New York, once you’re licensed as an LPN, your license is valid for life unless it is surrendered, revoked, annulled, or suspended by the New York State Board of Regents. However, to practice as an LPN, you must register with the New York State Education Department (NYSED). Your initial registration is valid for three years, and you must renew it every three years to continue practicing as an LPN.

Renewal requirements

To renew your New York LPN registration, you must:

  • Submit a renewal application. Complete the online renewal process through the NYSED Office of the Professions' Online Registration Renewal system.
  • Pay the renewal fee. The renewal fee for an LPN registration in New York is $73.
  • Complete CE requirements. Fulfill the four-hour CE requirements as specified by the New York State Board of Nursing.

CE requirements

New York requires LPNs to complete specific CE courses:

  • Infection control coursework: Practicing LPNs must complete NYSED-approved coursework in infection control every four years or qualify for an exemption. If you graduated from an NYSED-approved nursing program after September 1990, you’ve already completed this requirement as part of your education.
  • Child abuse identification and reporting: A one-time requirement of two hours on the identification and reporting of child abuse and maltreatment if you didn’t graduate from an NYSED-nursing program in the last four years.

Timelines and important dates

  • Renewal notifications: The NYSED sends email renewal notices five months before the end of your current registration period and by regular mail four months prior. These notices include a personal identification number (PIN) required for online renewal. If you don’t receive a notice, you’re still responsible for renewing your registration on time.
  • Renewal period: You can renew your registration online during the final five months of your current registration period. It's advisable to renew early to ensure all steps are completed on time.

Submitting the renewal application

To renew your registration:

  1. Access the online registration renewal system. Log in at https://eservices.nysed.gov/professions/renewal/start. You’ll need to select your profession and input your license number and PIN from the renewal notice.
  2. Complete the renewal application. Update your personal information, and answer all required questions, including those concerning professional conduct and, where applicable, CE.
  3. Pay the renewal fee. Follow the online instructions to complete payment using a credit card.
  4. Affirm CE completion. Attest to the completion of required CE hours and retain documentation in case of an audit.

Renewal fees

The renewal fee for a New York LPN license is $73.

Late renewal and reinstatement

If you don’t renew your registration before it expires, you’re not legally allowed to practice as an LPN in New York. To reactivate your registration, you must complete the renewal process and pay any applicable fees. Practicing with an expired registration may result in disciplinary action.

Verification of license status

You can verify your license and registration status through the NYSED Office of the Professions' verification service at https://www.op.nysed.gov/licensed-practical-nurses. This tool confirms your license's status and expiration date.

Keeping track of CE records

Maintain records of your CE activities, including certificates of completion, in case of an audit by the New York State Board of Nursing. This documentation is essential to verify compliance with CE requirements.

Tips for a smooth renewal process

  • Start early. Begin the renewal process as soon as the renewal period opens to ensure all steps are completed on time.
  • Stay organized. Keep personal information up to date and maintain records of all CE activities and related documentation.
  • Use the online portal. The online registration renewal system offers a streamlined renewal process.
  • Monitor communications. Regularly check your email and the NYSED Office of the Professions website for updates or notifications regarding your registration.

By adhering to these guidelines and staying proactive, ensure a seamless renewal of your New York LPN registration, allowing you to continue your nursing practice without interruption.
