Understanding the renewal cycle

In New Jersey, LPN licenses expire biennially on May 31 of odd- or even-numbered years, depending on the initial issuance date. It's crucial to renew your license before this date to avoid any lapse in licensure.

Renewal requirements

To renew your New Jersey LPN license, you must:

  • Submit a Renewal Application: Complete the online renewal process through the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs' MyLicense portal.
  • Pay the Renewal Fee: The renewal fee for an LPN license in New Jersey is $125. If you renew after the expiration date, a late fee of $50 will be added to your renewal fee.
  • Complete Continuing Education (CE) Requirements: Fulfill the CE requirements as specified by the New Jersey Board of Nursing.

Continuing education requirements

New Jersey requires LPNs to complete 30 contact hours of continuing education every two years. This includes:

  • One hour concerning prescription opioid drugs, covering alternatives to opioids for pain management and the risks and signs of opioid abuse, addiction, and diversion.
  • One hour on organ and tissue donation and recovery, addressing the clinical aspects of the donation and recovery process.

If you complete more than 30 CE hours in any biennial period, you may carry over up to 15 additional hours into the next period. Ensure that all CE courses are offered by an approved provider and retain proof of course completion in case of an audit.

Timelines and important dates

  • Renewal Notifications: The New Jersey Board of Nursing sends renewal notices at least 60 days before your license expiration date. If you do not receive a notice, you are still responsible for renewing your license on time.
  • Late Renewal: If you renew within 30 days after the expiration date, you can do so by paying the renewal fee plus a late fee. Licenses not renewed within this 30-day window will be administratively suspended without a hearing.

Submitting the renewal application

To renew your license:

  1. Access the MyLicense Portal: Log in or register at https://www.njconsumeraffairs.gov/renew/.
  2. Complete the Renewal Application: Update personal information and answer all required questions.
  3. Pay the Renewal Fee: Follow the online instructions to complete payment.
  4. Affirm CE Completion: Attest to the completion of required CE hours. Be sure to retain documentation for at least five years in case of audit.

Renewal Fees

  • Standard Renewal Fee: $125.
  • Late Renewal Fee: An additional $50 if renewed after the expiration date.

Late renewal and reinstatement

If you miss the renewal deadline, your license will expire. You have up to 30 days after the expiration date to renew by paying the renewal fee plus a late fee. If you do not renew within this 30-day window, your license will be administratively suspended without a hearing, and you must apply for reinstatement to resume practice.

Verification of license status

You can verify your license status through the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs' verification service at https://newjersey.mylicense.com/verification/. This tool confirms your license's current status and expiration date.

Keeping track of CE records

Maintain records of your CE activities, including certificates of completion, for at least five years after the renewal period. This documentation is essential if you're selected for a CE audit by the New Jersey Board of Nursing.

Tips for a smooth renewal process

  • Start Early: Begin the renewal process as soon as the renewal period opens to ensure all steps are completed on time.
  • Stay Organized: Keep personal information up to date and maintain records of all CE activities and related documentation.
  • Use the Online Portal: The MyLicense portal offers a streamlined renewal process.
  • Monitor Communications: Regularly check your email and the New Jersey Board of Nursing website for updates or notifications regarding your license.

By adhering to these guidelines and staying proactive, you can ensure a seamless renewal of your New Jersey LPN license, allowing you to continue your nursing practice without interruption.
