Psychological First Aid: How to Respond to Mental Health Emergencies

Join Alice Benjamin, MSN, ACNS-BC, FNP-C as she explores how Psychological First Aid (PFA) empowers nurses and other frontline healthcare professionals to stabilize, support, and safely respond to patients in emotional and psychological crisis. Through real world examples and trauma informed strategies, attendees will learn how to recognize early signs of emotional distress, de-escalate high-intensity situations, and activate critical resources such as the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline all while protecting their own mental wellness in the process.  

Learning Objectives

  • Define Psychological First Aid and its role in responding to mental health emergencies. 
  • Identify early warning signs of acute psychological distress in patients and peers. 
  • Apply trauma-informed care and de-escalation techniques in emotionally charged situations. 
  • Understand when and how to activate resources like the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. 
  • Incorporate mental hygiene practices to reduce burnout and maintain emotional resilience.  

One and a half (1.5) CE contact hours will be awarded after completing the program and course evaluation for the first 90 days. CEs will be provided by Nurse Approved, LLC, a California BRN-approved Continuing Education Provider, license/certification number 17734.
