Pressure injuries (PIs) are a form of tissue damage that arises from pressure and includes the stages that lead to skin breakdown. While the term PI will be used throughout this course, the terms decubitus ulcer, bedsore, and pressure ulcer are commonly used and interchangeable. These injuries are costly, painful, and often preventable health complications affecting roughly 2 million Americans every year (Mervis & Phillips, 2019).

The goal of this course is to educate nurses in the acute care setting on the assessment and staging of PIs.

After taking this course, you should be able to:
  • Identify the etiology and pathophysiology of PIs.
  • Recall elements of a comprehensive wound evaluation.
  • Recognize the characteristics of each of the PI stages.
