Goals and Learning Outcomes

Pressure injuries are the breakdown of skin integrity over bony prominences due to persistent pressure. Most often, pressure injuries are preventable and have become a significant concern to healthcare providers. This course discusses current practices on the assessment, prevention, and interventions for pressure injuries. Having a basic understanding of the structure and function of the skin will help you identify and report changes in skin condition and improve the quality of an individual’s life. 

The goal of this course is to educate nurses in post-acute care settings on the assessment, intervention, and prevention of pressure injuries.


After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • List practices and current guidelines for the prevention of pressure ulcers.
  • Describe the various treatment options of pressure ulcers.
  • Identify the NPUAP classification system for staging pressure injuries.
  • Identify the components of the wound assessment and associated documentation.
  • Describe the NPIAP classification system for staging pressure injuries.
  • Recognize at least two treatment options for pressure injuries.
  • Identify at least three practices/guidelines used for the prevention of pressure injuries.
  • Define pressure ulcers and identify the NPUAP classification system for staging pressure ulcers.
  • Describe the risk assessment and wound assessment tools used for pressure ulcers.
  • Identify the documentation and coding requirements for reimbursement purposes
