Goals and Learning Outcomes

This course meets the Florida Board of Nursing’s requirement for advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) on prescribing controlled substances. The Florida Board of Nursing requires a three-contact-hour educational course on controlled substance prescribing for advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) that needs to be fulfilled before each license renewal. This educational activity will address issues related to the regulation, medical management, misuse, use disorder, and diversion of controlled substances prescribed for pain, anxiety disorders, insomnia, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. In addition, other commonly prescribed controlled substances will be discussed, including weight-loss medications and testosterone replacement.

The goal of this course is to provide advanced practice registered nurses in Florida with information about best practices in prescribing controlled substances, including safe and effective prescribing, administration, and dispensing of controlled substances to patients with conditions that are treated with these types of medications.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Recall the advanced practice registered nurse’s scope of practice and regulatory factors for prescribing controlled substances in accordance with the § 464.012 and 456.44 F.S.
  • Discuss the scheduled medication categories listed under the Controlled Substance Act and name at least three examples of each category.
  • Identify components of patient evaluation and education necessary when controlled substances are prescribed.
  • Define the indications of short- and long-term opioid therapy and other key elements for safe, effective management of acute and chronic pain.
  • Describe the pathology and appropriate prescribing of controlled substances for the management of various diagnoses.
  • Discuss substance use disorders as they relate to controlled substance use, including the prevalence, signs, and symptoms.
