Goals and Learning Outcomes

When a systematic and high-quality approach is used to appraise the work of a peer compared to evidence-based and professional practice, this is an example of peer review. Peer review is essential for being a part of a profession, but few healthcare organizations have meaningful nursing peer review. Nursing has lagged behind other professional groups, especially physicians, in creating a peer-review agenda. Authentic nursing peer review requires the use of evidence-based standards by all nurses, regardless of role or practice setting. Current research demonstrates that most healthcare organizations do not have evidence-based peer-review processes for nurses in all settings and levels (Whitney et al, 2016).

The goal of this course is to inform nurses about the evidence-based peer-review process for clinical nurses.


After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Describe the role of peer review in professional practice
  • Discuss the role of peer review in creating and sustaining quality and safety outcomes
  • Explain evidence-based practice principles for nursing peer-review activities in a contemporary model of nursing practice
  • Examine nurses’ duty to use peer review in professional practice.
  • Review evidence-based practice principles for nursing peer-review activities for safe patient outcomes and professional development.
