Goals and Learning Outcomes

In the U.S., the use and abuse of opioids has become an epidemic, costing the nation billions of dollars every year. While opioids can be a safe and effective method of pain management, they can also be highly addictive. The issue is compounded when providers prescribe opioids to patients who are at high risk of opioid misuse or abuse without exploring other options first. As a healthcare provider, you play a critical role in addressing the opioid epidemic. In this module, three cases will be explored relating to the use of opioids.

The goal of this course is to use case studies to educate physicians, physician assistants, and nurses about opioid use in the U.S. and the impact on patient outcomes.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Identify patients at risk for opioid misuse through behavioral and substance use screening.
  • Identify patients at an increased risk for opioid abuse based on their comorbidities and demographics.
  • Demonstrate appropriate pain assessment strategies, utilizing motivational interviewing and the Brief Pain Inventory.
  • Apply pharmacological best practices around prescription components, prescription drug monitoring programs, and compliance with opioid-use agreements.
  • Use information therapy to equip patients with the knowledge to self-manage appropriately.
  • Apply alternative pain management methods to decrease reliance on opioids and decrease abuse.
  • Identify patients at an increased risk for opioid misuse or abuse.
  • Describe best practices for opioid administration.
