Overview
Vitamins and minerals are required by the body to carry out important functions. Most vitamins and minerals are consumed through your diet and deficiencies are rare. People with kidney disease are at higher risk for nutrient deficiencies due to dietary restrictions, since waste products build up in their body and change the way it uses certain vitamins and minerals. Some vitamins are even lost during dialysis treatments, or medications can change how vitamins and minerals are used in the body. This course will review the functions of important vitamins and minerals associated with renal disease. It will also provide recommendations for, or against, supplementation.
Goals and Learning Outcomes
- Prioritize how water-soluble vitamins should be restricted or supplemented in patients with renal disease.
- Recall the role of fat-soluble vitamins and their safety in patients with renal disease.
- Indicate how important minerals should be restricted or supplemented in patients with renal disease.
