Goals and Learning Outcomes

  • Discuss external (indirect) and internal (direct) fetal monitoring methods and principles of patient education related to electronic fetal monitoring (EFM).
  • Recognize and manage artifact, signal ambiguity, and equipment failure and troubleshooting.
  • Recognize the methods and uses of fetal heart rate auscultation and fetal movement counting.
  • Recall the elements and uses of nonstress testing (NST), fetal vibroacoustic stimulation (VAS), fetal scalp stimulation, and biophysical profile (BPP).
  • Interpret doppler velocimetry and fetal umbilical blood gas analysis findings.
  • Interpret fetal heart rate patterns and characteristics using National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) categories.
  • Recall assessment, intervention, and management strategies for tracings that are not Category I (normal) tracings.
  • Recognize abnormal uterine activity and fetal cardiac dysrhythmias.
  • Recognize normal uteroplacental and umbilical circulation, fetal circulation, factors affecting maternal and fetal oxygenation, and compensatory mechanisms.
  • Recall how to assess uterine activity and the effects of drugs and anesthesia on fetal response.
  • Identify maternal and fetal risks related to preterm gestation, hypertensive disorders, diabetes, perinatal infections, placental and uterine abnormalities, multiple gestations, and maternal obesity.
  • Recognize appropriate nursing management and interventions and fetal heart rate patterns that may appear related to maternal and fetal complications.
  • Recognize the principles of patient safety and components of evidence-based practice (EBP).
  • Identify professional, ethical, and legal issues associated with electronic fetal monitoring (EFM).
