Goals and Learning Outcomes

Multiple myeloma is hematological cancer that involves a plasma cell, a type of white blood cell. Abnormal plasma cells, called myeloma cells, grow uncontrolled in a manner that produces bulky tumors in the body’s bone marrow. Patients with multiple myeloma often experience symptoms such as fatigue, diarrhea, peripheral neuropathies, and pain that decrease quality of life while presenting a management challenge for the healthcare team. New technologies and advances in medication have offered treatment options for patients that develop resistance to conventional therapy.

The goal of this course is to provide nurses with the latest knowledge about the diagnosis of multiple myeloma, as well as treatment options and clinical interventions for the disease.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • List the symptoms and methods used to diagnose multiple myeloma
  • Describe current treatment options for multiple myeloma
  • Define the supportive care issues related to treatment for multiple myeloma
  • Identify signs and symptoms, diagnostic workup, and treatment options for multiple myeloma.
  • Recognize the supportive care needs related to treatment for multiple myeloma.
