Goals and Learning Outcomes

Preventing abuse, neglect, and mistreatment of residents is always a top priority for healthcare organizations. When an allegation of abuse has been made, an investigation must take place to determine if the abuse has occurred and identify what steps can be taken to prevent further abuse. This course discusses the federal regulations related to abuse and neglect. It also discusses the steps needed to conduct a comprehensive and thorough abuse investigation.

The goal of this course is to educate administrators and nurses in post-acute care with conducting abuse investigations.

A large portion of the information in this module was sourced from Appendix PP of the State Operations Manual last updated in 2017 as published by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services unless otherwise stated.

  • Explain techniques to use when interviewing those involved in the investigation.
