Goals and Learning Outcomes

In patients with symptoms of acute stroke, early recognition and interventions have been identified as critical factors in stroke outcomes. Thrombolytic therapy continues to be the standard of care for treating ischemic strokes by restoring cerebral blood flow and limiting further brain injury. Given this, nurses must understand the mechanism of thrombolytic therapy, appropriate medication options, and complications.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Describe the physiological stages of clot creation.
  • Differentiate between clot inhibition and fibrinolysis.
  • Outline patient monitoring techniques and management principles.
  • Identify patients who are candidates for thrombolytic therapy in the setting of an acute stroke.
  • Identify nursing care for patients receiving thrombolytic therapy.
  • Recall two medications for the treatment of post-ischemic stroke.
