Should I Include Non-Nursing Job Experiences on My Resume?

Nurses studying on the computer

Question:

Dear Donna,

I am getting into nursing later in life after being employed in the finance and child care fields. As a new grad, how do I represent myself on my resume? Should I include non-nursing job experiences?

Laura

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Laura,

Congratulations and welcome to the profession! There are many folks like you coming into nursing from another career. This extra life and work experience will work to your advantage.

By all means, include your non-nursing job experience. Today's nurses must have a varied skill set/knowledge base to work in a complex, fast-paced and ever-changing healthcare environment. Your background in both finance and child care relate directly to nursing/healthcare.

Here's an article you might find helpful: ?FAQs About Student Nurse Resumes? (http://www.dcardillo.com/articles/faqnurseres.html). Even though you are a graduate nurse, the advice applies to you.

My best wishes,
Donna
