Understanding the renewal cycle

In Pennsylvania, LPN licenses expire biennially. It's your responsibility to renew your license before the expiration date, regardless of whether you receive a renewal notice. Failure to renew on time can result in your license becoming inactive, prohibiting you from legally practicing as an LPN in the state.

Renewal requirements

To renew your Pennsylvania LPN license, you must:

  • Submit a renewal application: Complete the online renewal process through the Pennsylvania Licensing System (PALS). Ensure all information is accurate and up to date.
  • Pay the renewal fee: The biennial renewal fee for an LPN license in Pennsylvania is $76. Payment is made through the PALS system during the renewal process.
  • Complete continuing education (CE) requirements: Fulfill the 2 CE hour requirements as specified by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing.

Continuing education requirements

Pennsylvania requires LPNs to complete specific continuing education to ensure ongoing competency:

  • Child abuse recognition and reporting: LPNs must complete 2 hours of Board-approved continuing education in child abuse recognition and reporting for biennial renewal of their license.
  • Additional continuing education: While the state mandates the child abuse recognition and reporting training, it's advisable to engage in additional CE courses to stay current with nursing practices and enhance professional development.

Timelines and important dates

  • Renewal period: It's advisable to begin the renewal process well in advance of your license expiration date to ensure all requirements are met and to avoid any last-minute issues. The Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing typically sends out renewal notifications several months before the expiration date. However, it is ultimately the nurse’s responsibility to keep track of their renewal date and complete all necessary steps on time.
  • Late renewal: If you fail to renew your license by the expiration date, it becomes inactive. Practicing with an inactive license is illegal and may result in disciplinary action. To reactivate an inactive license, you must meet the Board's reactivation requirements, which may include additional fees and proof of competency.

Submitting the renewal application

To renew your license:

  1. Access the Pennsylvania licensing system (PALS): Log in or register at https://www.pals.pa.gov/. The Board recommends using a desktop or laptop with Internet Explorer to avoid technical issues.
  2. Complete the renewal application: Update personal information and answer all required questions. Ensure accuracy to prevent processing delays.
  3. Pay the renewal fee: Follow the online instructions to complete payment of the $76 renewal fee.
  4. Attest to CE completion: You must attest on the renewal application that you have completed the required 2 hours of child abuse recognition and reporting CE. Retain documentation of CE completion in case of audit.

Renewal fees

  • Standard renewal fee: $76 for biennial renewal.

Late renewal and reactivation

If you do not renew your license by the expiration date, it becomes inactive, and you must apply for reactivation to resume practice. Practicing with an inactive license is illegal and may result in penalties. The reactivation process may require proof of competency, completion of additional CE, and payment of reactivation fees.

Verification of license status

You can verify your license status through the Pennsylvania Licensing System (PALS) at https://www.pals.pa.gov/. This tool confirms your license's current status and expiration date.

Keeping track of CE records

Maintain records of your CE activities, including certificates of completion, for at least five years after the renewal period. This documentation is essential if you're selected for a CE audit by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing.

Tips for a smooth renewal process

  • Start early: Begin the renewal process as soon as the renewal period opens to ensure all steps are completed on time.
  • Stay organized: Keep personal information up to date and maintain records of all CE activities and related documentation.
  • Use the online portal: The PALS system offers a streamlined renewal process. Ensure you have access and are familiar with the system before your renewal period.
  • Monitor communications: Regularly check your email and the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing website for updates or notifications regarding your license.

By adhering to these guidelines and staying proactive, you can ensure a seamless renewal of your Pennsylvania LPN license, allowing you to continue your nursing practice without interruption.
