Understanding the renewal cycle

In Oklahoma, LPN licenses expire biennially on the last day of your birth month. It's best to renew your license before it expires to avoid any lapse in your ability to practice.

Renewal requirements

To renew your Oklahoma LPN license, you must:

  • Submit a renewal application: Complete the online renewal process through the Oklahoma Board of Nursing's Nurse Portal.
  • Pay the renewal fee: The renewal fee for an LPN license in Oklahoma is $75.
  • Meet continuing qualifications for practice: Fulfill one of the continuing qualifications for practice as specified by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing.

Continuing qualifications for practice

As of January 1, 2014, LPNs in Oklahoma must meet continuing qualifications for practice by completing one or more of the following requirements within the two years prior to the license expiration date:

  1. Employment: Verification of at least 520 work hours in a position that requires an LPN license.
  2. Continuing education: Completion of at least 24 contact hours of continuing education applicable to nursing practice.
  3. Certification: Current certification in a nursing specialty area.
  4. Refresher course: Completion of a Board-approved refresher course.
  5. Academic coursework: Completion of at least six academic semester credit hours of nursing coursework at the licensee’s current level of licensure or higher.

These options cannot be combined to meet the requirements within the same two-year period.

Timelines and important dates

  • Renewal period: It's advisable to begin the renewal process well in advance of your license expiration date to ensure all requirements are met and to avoid any last-minute issues. The Oklahoma Board of Nursing typically sends out renewal notifications 90 days before the expiration date. However, it is ultimately the nurse’s responsibility to keep track of their renewal date and complete all necessary steps on time.
  • Grace period: If you’re running behind schedule, you have a 30-day grace period after the expiration date during which your license is active and can still be renewed as long as you submit your required information within that time frame.

Submitting the renewal application

To renew your license:

  1. Access the nurse portal: Log in or register at the Oklahoma Board of Nursing's Nurse Portal.
  2. Complete the renewal application: Update personal information and answer all required questions.
  3. Pay the renewal fee: Follow the online instructions to complete payment.
  4. Attest to continuing qualifications: Attest to the completion of one of the required continuing qualifications for practice; retain documentation in case of audit.

Renewal fees

  • Standard renewal fee: $75.

Late renewal and reinstatement

If you do not renew your license before it expires, you have a 30-day grace period during which your license remains active, and you can still renew by submitting the required information. After the grace period, if the license is not renewed, it will lapse, and you must apply for reinstatement to resume practice. Practicing with a lapsed license is illegal and may result in penalties.

Verification of license status

You can verify your license status through the Oklahoma Board of Nursing's verification service. This tool confirms your license's current status and expiration date.

Keeping track of continuing education records

Maintain records of your continuing education activities, including certificates of completion, for at least four years after the renewal period. This documentation is essential if you're selected for an audit by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing.

Tips for a smooth renewal process

  • Start early: Begin the renewal process as soon as the renewal period opens to ensure all steps are completed on time.
  • Stay organized: Keep personal information up to date and maintain records of all continuing education activities and related documentation.
  • Use the online portal: The Nurse Portal offers a streamlined renewal process.
  • Monitor communications: Regularly check your email and the Oklahoma Board of Nursing website for updates or notifications regarding your license.

By adhering to these guidelines and staying proactive, you can ensure a seamless renewal of your Oklahoma LPN license, allowing you to continue your nursing practice without interruption.
