Understanding the renewal cycle

In Maryland, LPN licenses expire biennially on the 28th day of your birth month. If you were born in an odd-numbered year, your license expires in odd-numbered years; if in an even-numbered year, it expires in even-numbered years. For example, if you were born on March 15, 1985, your license would expire on March 28, 2025.

Renewal requirements

Effective April 1, 2022, all renewal applicants are required to complete a one-time implicit bias training course approved by the Maryland Board of Nursing, included in our Maryland license renewal package.

Continuing education requirements

If you choose to fulfill the renewal requirements through CEUs, ensure that:

  • The CEUs are approved by recognized entities such as the American Nurses Association (ANA), American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), Maryland Nurses Association (MNA), or other local, state, or national professional nursing associations.
  • College or university coursework related to nursing practice can also qualify, with 15 CEUs awarded per semester hour, provided you achieve a grade of "C" or higher.
  • CEUs must be earned within the two years immediately preceding the renewal application and cannot be carried forward into the next renewal period.

Timelines and important dates

  • Renewal period: Opens 90 days before your license expiration date.
  • Expiration date: 28th day of your birth month every two years.
  • Late renewal: You can renew online up to 30 days after the expiration date, but practicing with an expired license is illegal.

It's advisable to complete your renewal application well before your expiration date to avoid any lapses in licensure.

  • Provide proof of meeting renewal requirements: Such as active practice hours, recent education, or CEUs.
  • Pay the reinstatement fee: This includes the standard renewal fee plus any applicable late fees.

Verification of license status

You can verify your license status through the Maryland Board of Nursing online verification system at https://lookup.mbon.org/verification/Search.aspx. This tool confirms your license's current status and expiration date.

Keeping track of CE records

Maintain records of your CE activities, including certificates of completion, for at least six years. This documentation is essential if you're selected for a CEU audit by the Maryland Board of Nursing.

Tips for a smooth renewal process
