What Is a CVICU Nurse? Role, Responsibilities & Salary

Working in the fast-paced world of critical care, a CVICU nurse plays a pivotal role in supporting patients through some of the most challenging and life-threatening moments of their cardiovascular health journey.

This role requires a unique blend of technical skills, critical thinking, and compassionate patient care.

What is a CVICU nurse?

A CVICU nurse is a registered nurse (RN) who specializes in caring for patients in the cardiovascular intensive care unit (CVICU). These patients often have complex cardiac conditions requiring close monitoring and advanced medical interventions.

CVICU nurses work alongside a multidisciplinary team, including cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, respiratory therapists, and other specialists, to provide comprehensive care.

Key responsibilities of a CVICU nurse

  • Monitoring vital signs and hemodynamics: CVICU nurses continuously monitor patients' vital signs, including heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, and other hemodynamic parameters. They use advanced equipment such as arterial lines, central venous catheters, and pulmonary artery catheters to gather accurate and real-time data.
  • Administering medications and IV drips: They are responsible for administering various medications, including vasopressors, anticoagulants, and antiarrhythmics. They carefully manage intravenous drips and adjust dosages based on the patient’s condition.
  • Performing cardiac assessments: Conducting thorough cardiac assessments, including listening for abnormal heart sounds, checking for signs of fluid overload, and recognizing arrhythmias, is a critical aspect of a CVICU nurse's role.
  • Collaborating with the healthcare team: CVICU nurses work closely with cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized care plans. Effective communication and collaboration are necessary to ensure the best outcomes.
  • Providing post-operative care: After cardiac surgeries, such as coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) or valve replacements, CVICU nurses are responsible for monitoring patients' recovery. This includes managing chest tubes, pacing wires, wound care, and patients’ pain levels.

CVICU nurse skills and qualifications

To become a CVICU nurse, a licensed RN should have at least an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), although a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is usually preferred. Additional certifications, such as Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), are typically required. Many employers also prefer candidates with experience in critical care or cardiovascular nursing.

Salary and job outlook

CVICU nurses are among the highest-paid nursing professionals due to the advanced clinical skills required and the critical nature of their work.  The median CVICU nurse salary in the United States is $124,358 as of March 19, 2025. Salaries can vary based on geographic location, experience level, and the specific healthcare facility.

The demand for CVICU nurses is expected to grow in tandem with the increasing prevalence of cardiovascular diseases and the aging population. This trend highlights a strong job outlook and opportunities for career advancement in this specialized field.

Career advancement

CVICU nurses have various opportunities for career advancement. They can pursue advanced certifications, such as the Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) credential, to enhance their expertise and job prospects. Some may choose to specialize further, take on managerial roles, or pursue advanced degrees to become nurse practitioners or educators in the field.

A career as a CVICU nurse is challenging and rewarding. It offers the opportunity to make a significant impact on patients' lives during critical moments, yet it also requires a commitment to continuous learning and the ability to work in high-pressure environments. For those passionate about cardiac care, it can be an incredibly fulfilling path.
