I am 16 and want to be a nurse. What jobs can help me prepare for my career?

Question:

Dear Donna,

I?m 16 years old, and when I graduate from high school I want to be a nurse. What jobs can I do now that will help me prepare for a nursing career?

Amber

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Amber,

It?s great that you want to work in a position that will prepare you for a career in nursing. That is a smart thing to do.

For starters, check with your guidance counselor. You may be able to become a certified nurses aide or home health aide. Each state has different requirements for this, and your counselor should be able to help.

At the very least, start volunteering in a hospital or nursing home. Visit the following Web sites for more information about the profession: www.DiscoverNursing.com and www.nsna.org.

Best wishes,
Donna
