Sharp Memorial Hospital Opens Stephen Birch Healthcare Center

Last week, Sharp Memorial Hospital opened its new 315,000-square-foot, 334-bed Stephen Birch Healthcare Center, the first hospital to open in San Diego since 1993.

The private patient rooms feature modern furniture, as well as iPod docking stations and flat-screen TVs.

The seven-story, $194-million acute-care tower features private patient rooms with iPod docking stations and flat-screen TVs, two nursing stations on each floor, and sinks near the entrance of each room to remind both staff members and visitors to wash their hands frequently.

The steel-and-glass structure also has hallways lined with beach scenes, a jade garden, and large windows to let in a lot of sunlight.

The tower replaces a 54-year-old structure that did not meet California’s seismic requirements.
