Understanding the renewal cycle

In South Dakota, LPN licenses expire biennially. The South Dakota Board of Nursing (SDBON) will mail a renewal reminder 60 days before your license expires. It's your responsibility to renew your license before the expiration date to avoid any lapse in your ability to practice.

Renewal requirements

To renew your South Dakota LPN license, you must:

  • Submit a renewal application: Complete the online renewal process through the South Dakota Board of Nursing's Online System.
  • Pay the renewal fee: The renewal fee for an LPN license in South Dakota is $115.
  • Employment verification: Provide verification that you've practiced nursing for at least 140 hours in any 12-month period or an accumulated total of at least 480 hours within the preceding six years. If you cannot provide this verification, you must complete an LPN Refresher Course consisting of an 80-hour self-study theoretical portion and 80 hours of supervised clinical practice.

Continuing education requirements

South Dakota does not require continuing education (CE) for LPN license renewal. However, you must meet the employment verification requirements as specified above.

Timelines and important dates

  • Renewal period: It's advisable to begin the renewal process well in advance of your license expiration date to ensure all requirements are met and to avoid any last-minute issues. The South Dakota Board of Nursing typically sends out renewal notifications 60 days before the expiration date. However, it is ultimately the nurse’s responsibility to keep track of their renewal date and complete all necessary steps on time.
  • Late renewal: If you fail to renew your license by the expiration date, it becomes inactive. Practicing with an inactive license is illegal and may result in disciplinary action. To reactivate an inactive license, you must meet the Board's reactivation requirements, which may include additional fees and proof of competency.

Submitting the renewal application

To renew your license:

  1. Access the online renewal system: Log in or register at the South Dakota Board of Nursing's Online System.
  2. Complete the renewal application: Update personal information and answer all required questions. Ensure accuracy to prevent processing delays.
  3. Pay the renewal fee: Follow the online instructions to complete payment of the $115 renewal fee. The Board accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover.
  4. Provide employment verification: Submit verification of your nursing employment as specified in the renewal requirements. Retain documentation in case of audit.

Renewal fees

  • Standard renewal fee: $115 for biennial renewal.

Late renewal and reactivation

If you do not renew your license by the expiration date, it becomes inactive, and you must apply for reactivation to resume practice. Practicing with an inactive license is illegal and may result in penalties. The reactivation process may require proof of competency, completion of additional requirements, and payment of reactivation fees.

Verification of license status

You can verify your license status through the South Dakota Board of Nursing's online verification system. This tool confirms your license's current status and expiration date.

Keeping track of employment records

Maintain records of your employment verification, including documentation of hours worked, for at least six years after the renewal period. This documentation is essential if you're selected for an audit by the South Dakota Board of Nursing.

Tips for a smooth renewal process

  • Start early: Begin the renewal process as soon as the renewal period opens to ensure all steps are completed on time.
  • Stay organized: Keep personal information up to date and maintain records of all employment verification and related documentation.
  • Use the online system: The South Dakota Board of Nursing's Online System offers a streamlined renewal process. Ensure you have access and are familiar with the system before your renewal period.
