Is It True That Handwritten Thank You Notes After an Interview Are Preferred and Considered More Personal?

Nurses reviewing continuing education on computer

Question:

Dear Donna,

I?ve always heard handwritten thank you notes after an interview are preferred and considered more personal. Is it true?

Wondering About Writing

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Wondering About Writing,

There was a time that handwritten interview follow-up notes were the norm but those days are long past. Today, they would be considered too folksy and informal and even unsophisticated in some cases. In today?s hi-tech world, typed follow-up notes are the norm. And they should be on good-quality stationary (not computer paper). It?s OK to send a brief text or e-mail message right after the interview, but you should still follow-up with a typed note sent via the U.S. Post Office. For more details about interview follow-up protocol, read ?Follow-up is good form? (www.Nurse.com/Cardillo/Good-Form).

Best wishes,
Donna
