Is there training available to do UAS assessments?

Dear Donna,

I am a retired RN with experience as a coordinator of care for a home care agency. I am interested in returning to work to do UAS assessments and want to know if there is any training available for this career change. I have experience with OASIS documentation and also have a CCM certification.

Wants to Learn Assessments

Dear Wants to Learn Assessments,

BY UAS I assume you are referring to the Uniform Assessment System in New York for Adult Day Services, assisted living facilities and more. Your background and credentials are perfectly suited to this and you should be able to make a smooth transition.

The New York Department of Health governs these assessments and provides the training, which is web-based. The entire program, including coordinator requirements and training are outlined in the document “UAS-NY Transition Guide.”

UAS-NY has a support desk for any questions about the training. I suggest you start there. Reach them via email: [email protected] or telephone: 518-408-1021 during regular business hours.

Best wishes,

The department of health doesn’t have training for Uas or certification. Doh states only certain organizations such as Chha, Mltc…have access to Uas training tool. However, I was wondering if you knew of any other way to get this training?

Dear Jennifer S. Howell: Not sure if you received answers yet…but in order to become NYS UAS Certified, one must do so via an agency that supplies nurse-assessors (ARN’s) for the insurance carriers (E.G., – Aetna better health, Fidelis etc). Some agencies pays you – either as a full-time / part-time or per-case – ‘assessor.’ A nice agency covering: Brooklyn, Queens, LI (Nassau/Suffolk), Manhattan, possibly more areas is – “Allied” with headquarters in Brooklyn. Good Luck.

You must apply at a LHCSA or CHHA that does this kind of subcontracted work. if you are open and tech saavy, they will offer to train you. However, if your bad at computers, understanding insurance logic and self management, I would not suggest UAS for anyone who requires the agency help all the way. In my agency, we train assessors, but assessors who require so much assistance, you will find that less coordinators and agencies want to deal with that. No one likes super picky assessors who only want this zip code area and only want to do that, and need scheduling assistance for everything. That lowers your chance of getting the work and the training. You have to be completely willing.

      Hi Julannah,
Just saw your question. If you haven’t already gotten an answer, the trainings ate all done on line (according to this article), but you can only get it through an agency. So it seems that you must be hired by an agency that offers uas testing and then have them sign you up as part of their company.

Hi Larry, I know you wrote a couple years ago! Just coming across this post now. For anyone who needs supplemental training, I’d suggest asking your UAS agency if you can shadow a more experienced nurse for a couple days. It will make you much more comfortable with the system, and ready to get back into it on your own.

I have a UAS Ny training and great experience. I wanted to find out if I can work independently. Basically, I would like to know if you can independently perform UAS NY assessment for Different MLTC without being a part of any agency or one particular MLTC. Something like independent contractor. If that possible, how can I introduce my skills and myself to those MLTC. Thank you for an advise

Hi Rita. I worked briefly for an agency doing UAS and was surprised and appalled that they essentially wanted me to lie to keep the score consistent. For example if it was documented in a prior assessment that the patient wandered I was encouraged to put this even though the patient was completely immobile. Is that normal?

Also, it took my a while, probably because I like to chat with the patient, but is there ways of streamlining the process to go quicker?

I just began working for Maxim (nursing agency). This is just one agency and there are several more!! If you call them, tell them what you are looking for and then they can get you connected with a company that needs UAS certified nurses. This is for NY State and there are so many jobs for nurses who are either CANS certified and/or UAS certified.

I hope your nursing license is still active. The money is good…50/hour. Go to an agency that will pay you that much!!!!

I called they’re number not very helpful in order for you to get the training you would have to be trained at a place of employment and with all that’s happening right now they’re saying that you would have to be trained at a new job you applied for but all the jobs you trying to apply for require that you have universal assessment system training certification so it’s a vicious cycle it’s a rat running on a wheel what can you do
