POSITION SUMMARY: The Enterostomal Therapist develops and implements plans of care for patients with stomas, draining wounds and pressure ulcers. The Enterostomal Therapist prepares and conducts preoperative and postoperative instructional sessions for patients and families, provides advice and counseling to patients and confers with physicians and nurses on enterostomal/wound treatments and procedures. The Enterostomal Therapist possesses knowledge of the principles of growth and development and the particular skills necessary to provide optimum patient care to the population for which he or she is employed. The Enterostomal Therapist is accountable for their practice and care coordination. The Enterostomal Therapist is expected to practice autonomously utilizing evidence based practices. Care provided reflects support of the mission, vision and values of Medical Center of Plano and the philosophy of the Department of Nursing and reflects the nurse's primary commitment to protect the health, safety and rights of the individual, family or community.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide consultative and direct clinical services to persons with fecal and urinary diversions, wound management problems, pressure and vascular ulcers, cutaneous fistulae, problems with cutaneous tubes and drains and skin care needs associated with incontinence.
  • Develop, implement and revise policies, procedures, competencies and plans of care related to care of patients with ostomies, draining wounds/pressure ulcers and skin care of patients in general.
  • Provide services with patient safety as the primary goal.
  • Provide care in an evidenced-based environment.
  • Practice autonomously, consistent with practice standards and research based policy/procedures
  • Exercise independent judgment within the context of interdisciplinary patient care
  • Provide care/treatment/services within the theoretical framework of modeling and role-modeling
  • Maintain compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and standards of those planning, regulatory and accrediting agencies which affect nursing and the institution.
  • Prepare appropriate teaching materials for patients/families and staff regarding skin/ostomy wounds.
  • Participate in health promotion/educational community involvement, life time learning and nursing research.
  • Participate in development and evaluation of professional practice by participating on unit and/or hospital committees, special projects and attendance at staff meetings and town halls.
  • Actively participate in unit and/or hospital performance improvement activities.
  • Attendance and being on time, ready to work your scheduled hours is an essential job function.
Qualifications
  • TX RN license
  • WOCNC certified
  • Ostomy/Wound care experience required
