Job Summary:
Provides professional nursing care under supervision of physicians and suite team leaders for clinic patients by following established standards and practices.
Job-Specific Functions:
Major responsibilities included but not limited to: Provides general nursing care to patients under direction of physicians. Greets patients and prepares them for physician examination. Obtains vitals and weight. Screens patients for appropriate information. Instructs patients in collection of samples and tests. Gives injections and/or immunizations, administers prescribed medications, assists in minor office procedures. Maintains timely flow of patients. Prepares, stocks and cleans exam rooms. Maintains supplies and equipment for treatment. Observes, records and reports patient's condition to drug reaction or treatment to physicians. Educates patients' families about diagnostic procedures, medications under the physicians' supervision. Communicates test results to patients. Arranges scheduling of tests, admissions and or treatments at office or another facility. Ensures appointment preferences are given to patients in emergency situations. Responds to incoming patient phone calls. Instructs patients and family regarding medication or treatment instructions under the physicians' supervision. Formulates and updates patient charts. Attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested. Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations. Maintains patient confidentiality. Performs related work as required. Maintains highest level of confidentiality in regards to internal proprietary information & patient information. Follows all required regulatory & legal compliance related to confidentiality (HIPAA, etc.)
Required Specifications:
Education: Graduate of an accredited school of practical nursing or medical assisting.
Licensure/Certification: HCA certification must be completed within the first 90 days of hire. Valid state license to practice practical nursing or Washington State certification for medical assisting. CPR certification. Aids training required. Must meet current immunization standards.
Experience: Two (2) years experience in an outpatient office setting preferred.
Special Skills Required:
Knowledge of: the principles and skills needed for practical nursing to provide patient care and treatment; examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures; medications and their effects on patients; patient education principles to develop a self-care program; common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
Skill in: using a variety of office equipment including phone, writing instruments, PC, fax and medical equipment including stethoscope, EKG machine, ear washing equipment, speculums, scales, blood pressure cuff; administering a variety of treatments and medications as directed; using various types of equipment for examination and treatment procedures; taking vital signs; maintaining records and writing reports; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, peers, and the public.
Ability to: maintain quality control standards; identify problems and recommend solutions; react calmly and effectively in emergency situations; interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures; communicate clearly.
Physical Abilities: Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 100 pounds. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours. Requires exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.
