I. Position Summary: The charge nurse manages patient flow in the department through organizing, coordinating, providing and monitoring the care provided throughout the department. The primary focus is on quality and continuity of care. Demonstrates advanced knowledge and skills in the care of emergency patients. Duties are delegated consistent with each staff member’s scope of practice and function within the overall plan of care for the emergency department. Facilitates the growth and development, and empowers the staff by functioning as a role model, leader, resource person, negotiator, coach, mentor and counselor as needed. The charge nurse displays positive support for the mission and values of RMC. Provides and supervises care delivered to all age groups: neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric.

II. Position Requirements:

A.   Licensure/Certification/Registration: Current Colorado Registered Nurse License,

B. Education and Training: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, BSN preferred. Current BLS, ACLS and PALS or ENPC ; CEN within 1 year (went into effect February 2011).

C. Experience: Minimum of 3 years emergency nursing required.

D. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Provides safe and appropriate care within the standards of nursing practice at RMC. Demonstrates good organizational skills, ability to plan and provide for delivery of nursing services. Displays appropriate judgment and problem solving skills. Communicates effectively, in a positive and professional manner with staff and physicians, EMS personnel, patients and families. Responsible for daily and weekly staffing assignments (in collaboration with Clinical coordinator and Director), monitors staff needs, facilitates patient flow by coordinating with the triage nurse, admitting, nursing departments and physicians. Responsible for assigning daily quality control checks. Demonstrates the ability to address customer and staff concerns. Maintains current certificates and competencies and actively participates on the Unit Based Council, committees and staff meetings. Participates in the annual review of appropriate staff.

III. Degree of Supervision Required: Minimal. Frequent collaboration/coordination with the clinical coordinator and Director.
