Position Description
The Registered Nurse - First Assistant (RNFA) is a member of the Cardiothoracic team who is qualified by academic and clinical education to provide patient services under the supervision of the staff physician. The RNFA has acquired the knowledge, skills and judgement necessary to assist the surgeon through organized instruction and supervised practice. The RNFA practices under the direct supervision of the surgeon during the first assisting phase of the perioperative role. The RNFA is accountable to the Head Nurse of the CT-OR and must adhere to the guidelines established by the CT perioperative department for all RN's. Delivery of patient care is individualized relative to age/developmental, psycho-socio-cultural patient treatment needs.
Current Pennsylvania Nursing License and certification from a qualified program for RN-First Assistants. Three years of clinical experience in cardiothoracic surgery which includes scrubbing and circulating duties. Must demonstrate knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology, and operative techniques related to the specific operative procedures in which the RNFA assists. Performs effectively and harmoniously as a member of the CT operative team.
