Mounting pressure to find qualified nurse candidates can quickly put you in a tailspin.<\/p>\n<p>Here are five important tips to jump start your holiday recruiting roundup.<\/p>\n<h3>1 \u2014 Find the easy button<\/h3>\n<p>While some departments experience a lull in December productivity, that\u2019s not always the case in the HR department, said Staci Roberts, EVP of Cielo Healthcare, a recruitment and outsourcing agency headquartered in Brookfield, Wis.<\/p>\n<p>Though it almost goes without saying, it\u2019s always hard to recruit nurses and that\u2019s no different during the holidays, Roberts said. To find and hire nurses, she suggests making the process simple for busy nurses.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cYou need to make it as easy as possible for the nurses, from them knowing about your jobs, the <a href=\"https:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/improve-your-job-application-process-reach-qualified-candidates\/\">application process<\/a>, hiring process, up to the first day on the job,&#8221; she said. &#8220;That entire process needs to be as seamless and as easy as possible.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Want to attract the best talent? Then think of recruiting during the holidays as a courting process.<\/p>\n<p>Roberts said you must realize nurses want a \u201cconsumer-grade experience\u201d much like the online buying experience where customer service is skillfully built in, such as Amazon.<\/p>\n<p>As a licensed physical therapist for 21 years, Roberts understands the clinical demands of healthcare professionals and those of recruiters.<\/p>\n<h3>2 \u2014 Win \u2018em over with better pay<\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/pdf\/empsit.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/a> reports the unemployment rate at 3.2% in its November 2019 statistical review, which notes healthcare job growth is strong.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHealthcare employment continued on an upward trend in October (plus 15,000 jobs). Healthcare has added 402,000 jobs over the last 12 months,\u201d according to the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/empsit.nr0.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0report.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>What does this mean for recruiters?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>There\u2019s no way to sugarcoat it. Recruiters eager to find qualified candidates will face the same challenges until the problem is fixed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So what is the problem? We caught up with Steve Horwitz, an economics professor at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind., to gauge his perspective on <a href=\"https:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/add-hiring-new-grads-your-recruitment-list\/\">hiring during low unemployment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Call it the double whammy \u2014 a nursing shortage coupled with low unemployment. To attract, hire and retain skilled nurses, it boils down to better compensation.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe fact that there\u2019s a nursing shortage suggests that compensation being offered to nurses is insufficient to draw enough of them into the market to fill the openings,\u201d Horwitz said. \u201cThe fact that unemployment is low is precisely the problem. Nurses may well have other options.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The question is can healthcare organizations afford the consequences of nurses walking out the door? Horwitz suggests giving nurses more reasons to stay rather than <a href=\"https:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/how-effective-are-exit-interviews-when-nurses-resign\/\">reasons to leave<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only way to draw them into nursing jobs is to offer them enough to pull them away from the alternatives,\u201d he said. \u201cIf hospitals and other providers want to hire more nurses, they\u2019re likely going to have to offer them better pay and benefits.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>3 \u2014 Advantages of less competition<\/h3>\n<p>Hiring doesn\u2019t always come to a screeching halt when the holidays roll around \u2014 at least, not in all organizations.<\/p>\n<p>The truth is that recruiting during the holidays could give recruiters an advantage when looking for top talent.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Sure, some job seekers put their search on hold in December, but savvy job hunters also know it means less competition to land a job.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It can open a window of opportunity to snag outstanding candidates. And if your competitors don\u2019t bother to hire during the holidays, you will enjoy less competition from local employers, according <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ere.net\/december-is-prime-time-for-recruiting-because-the-competition-is-so-low\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to a report from ERE Media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Think quality over quantity.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/contact-blog\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11443 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Nursecom_MediaKit_B2B_April2019_768x250_V2-002.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nurse.com\/solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Nursecom_MediaKit_B2B_April2019_768x250_V2-002.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.nurse.com\/solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Nursecom_MediaKit_B2B_April2019_768x250_V2-002-300x98.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nurse.com\/solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Nursecom_MediaKit_B2B_April2019_768x250_V2-002-200x65.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.nurse.com\/solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Nursecom_MediaKit_B2B_April2019_768x250_V2-002-400x130.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.nurse.com\/solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Nursecom_MediaKit_B2B_April2019_768x250_V2-002-600x195.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>4 \u2014 Make same-day offers<\/h3>\n<p>When healthcare facilities find qualified nurses to hire, they don\u2019t have the luxury to delay decisions. If you like them, hire them.<\/p>\n<p>Roberts suggests <a href=\"https:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/how-hospital-rankings-lists-and-designations-can-boost-your-reputation-2\/\">pre-qualifying candidates<\/a> ahead of time with AI automation tools. Front-end processes like pre-screening candidates can help recruiters quickly sift through the pile of resumes.<\/p>\n<p>When candidates make the cut, Roberts suggests using an automated scheduling tool that allows them to set up the interview date. That way, you can meet face-to-face and make an offer.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cOnce they go through that pre-screen and come on site, our hiring leaders are ready to make same-day offers,\u201d Roberts said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In a pilot study with one client, Roberts said pre-screening automation tools allowed them to make same-day job offers and reduce hiring time by 50%.<\/p>\n<p>If text messaging is an option, use it to schedule interviews and expedite the process.<\/p>\n<p>With any automation technology \u2014 such as pre-screening and interview scheduling tools \u2014 make them available 24\/7, Roberts said. Remember that nurses work odd hours and might use online tools after a late-night shift ends and when recruiters are in bed.<\/p>\n<h3>5 \u2014 Networking at holiday parties<\/h3>\n<p>In between nibbling fancy hors d&#8217;oeuvres and sipping a glass of Merlot, networking at holiday parties lets extroverted employees help find your next hire.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>At company-sponsored events and other functions, consider reminding employees about job openings at your facility.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ask staff to <a href=\"https:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/successful-strategies-expand-reach-nursing-recruiting\/\">send referrals back to the HR department<\/a>.
