{"id":11386,"date":"2019-09-25T20:30:43","date_gmt":"2019-09-26T00:30:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nursemk.wpengine.com\/?p=11386"},"modified":"2025-08-18T13:29:07","modified_gmt":"2025-08-18T17:29:07","slug":"nursing-refresher-course-programs-can-aid-recruitment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nurse.com\/solutions\/blog\/nursing-refresher-course-programs-can-aid-recruitment","title":{"rendered":"Nursing Refresher Course Programs Can Aid Recruitment"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>There\u2019s a lot of information out there on return-to-practice programs for nurses.<\/h2>\n<p>As recruiters, you are in the best position to find and use nursing refresher course information to help returning nurses \u201ccome home again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I think many would agree being able to put our careers on hold at one time \u2014 and come back at another \u2014 is one of the great things about being a nurse.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>At different points in our careers for a variety of reasons, we decide to stop working for a time, only to find when we\u2019re ready to return the door to re-entry isn\u2019t easy to open.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It\u2019s that time of year when you\u2019re working on <a href=\"http:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/blog\/are-next-years-recruitment-and-retention-strategies-ready\/\">next year\u2019s recruitment program<\/a>, so if you don\u2019t have a great re-entry process in place why not research what\u2019s new out there in the design of current return-to-practice programs?<\/p>\n<p>Your major goal always is to recruit and retain good nurses, so don\u2019t allow yourself to lose them because your program isn\u2019t all it could be.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/contact-blog\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3328 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Nursecom_MediaKit_B2B_April2019_1000x250_V2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Make nursing refresher course programs work for you<\/h3>\n<p>First and most important is having a nursing refresher course program that works for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>In the past there were issues that made return-to-practice programs not only difficult for nurses\u2019 lives and careers, but also less than effective in providing them a successful re-entry. The goal of current programs is to be best at both.<\/p>\n<p>One such program is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahn.org\/education\/ahn-RetuRN-to-practice-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Allegheny Health Network\u2019s RetuRN to Practice<\/a> program that focuses on engaging returning nurses in current professional practice and enculturating them back into their department, specialty and unit.<\/p>\n<p>They describe their program as one that seeks to return nurses to the bedside and other practice sites by focusing on successfully re-integrating them into the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>This includes things like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/blog\/job-perks-nurses-want-job-offer\/\">Flexible scheduling<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Paid refresher courses<\/li>\n<li>A support network<\/li>\n<li>12-week refresher course in collaboration with the University of Delaware<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Nurses stop their careers for different amounts of time for different reasons, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Child care<\/li>\n<li>Parent care<\/li>\n<li>Supporting the work needs of their spouses<\/li>\n<li>Advancing their own education<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When nurses are ready to return, they are at different places in both their lives and careers. You\u2019re bringing them back into current nursing practice.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p>The life the nurse had most recently is not going away, so be mindful of child care and family needs with flexible staffing plans, connections with college programs, on-site child care and more.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p>Make the re-entry process welcoming for those not quite ready to return by having information on preliminary things they can do to prepare.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p>Assign some of your most senior nurses to be experts and<a href=\"http:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/blog\/improve-retention-preceptor-program\/\"> preceptors for your returnees.<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p>Provide mentors and set up returning nurse cohorts who provide additional support in the early stages of the program.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p>Former employees who took time off may decide to return. They are a special group to think about including in your plan. How wonderful if your program makes them feel you\u2019re glad they\u2019re back. They have much to offer because they know the facility. But remember they\u2019ll also likely have doubts, fears and questions about being out so long.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p>Some may have allowed their nursing licenses to lapse and may not be sure what they need to do now that they&#8217;re ready to return to practice. Have information ready about how to get their license reinstated or reactivated and what your state and board of nursing requires.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/blog\/tuition-reimbursement-could-be-key-attract-and-retain-fresh-rn-talent\/\">Consider paid tuition<\/a> for returnees in need of certain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nurse.com\/ce\/re-entry?p=1\">mandatory continuing education courses<\/a> or paying some of the return-to-practice costs of <a href=\"http:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/how\/#education-engagement\">needed continuing education<\/a>, online classes, etc.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p>If you\u2019re not able to set up a new program for 2020 at your facility, have information on local college-based programs or online programs available in your area.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Remember, each nurse\u2019s success at re-entry is all about the thought and preparation you put into your return-to-practice program.<\/p>\n<p>You want returning nurses to be ready to work for you and your patients, but you first need to get them ready.<\/p>\n<p>Do all you can to make their return to practice successful.
