{"id":11374,"date":"2019-08-21T19:50:48","date_gmt":"2019-08-21T23:50:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nursemk.wpengine.com\/?p=11374"},"modified":"2022-03-02T12:15:06","modified_gmt":"2022-03-02T17:15:06","slug":"make-cents-nurse-pay-recruit-quality-candidates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nurse.com\/solutions\/blog\/make-cents-nurse-pay-recruit-quality-candidates","title":{"rendered":"Make \u2018Cents\u2019 of Nurse Pay To Recruit Quality Candidates"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>With few barriers to landing jobs, nurses don&#8217;t necessarily take or want the first offer that comes along.<\/h2>\n<p>Which is why healthcare organizations cannot afford to skimp on nurse pay if they desire to hire highly skilled candidates. This becomes even more important <a href=\"http:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/blog\/shortage-surplus-how-keep-tabs-nursing-workforce-projections\/\">during a nursing shortage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The numbers are staggering. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/careeroutlook\/2018\/article\/bachelors-degree-outlook.htm#Healthcare%2520and%2520science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">projects the need<\/a> for an additional 203,700 RNs annually through 2026, which translates into more than 1.4 million nurses.<\/p>\n<h3>Gender pay gap persists<\/h3>\n<p>In traditional female occupations in the U.S., women earn about 20% less income, when compared to their male counterparts, according to a 2017\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/library\/publications\/2018\/demo\/p60-263.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">U.S. Census Bureau<\/a>\u00a0report.<\/p>\n<p>Registered nurses top the list when it comes to gender pay gaps, along with surgeons and physicians, according to an American Association of University Women survey.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aauw.org\/research\/the-simple-truth-about-the-gender-pay-gap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">survey reported female RNs brought home an average salary of $65,612,<\/a> whereas their male counterparts were compensated $71,590 annually.<\/p>\n<p>Our 2018 Nurse.com Nursing Salary Research Report also <a href=\"http:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/blog\/nurse-com-releases-nursing-salary-research-report\/\">found a gender pay gap of more than $6,000 annually.<\/a> In our survey results, male nurses earn $79,688 per year versus female nurses who earn $73,090 per year.<\/p>\n<p>But there is some good news. The nurse pay gap is slightly smaller than the national average across professions, at less than 10%, said Kathleen McCormac, RN, Esq., a San Francisco nurse attorney in private practice.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, she said, experts agree that gender wage gaps have not significantly improved since the 1970s, and the gap is even larger for black and Hispanic women.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cMales make up 10% of the nursing workforce and male nurses are paid more,\u201d McCormac said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The nurse pay gap grows even more noticeable as female nurses take on executive leadership roles in which they are no longer protected under their collective bargaining agreements, McCormac said.<\/p>\n<h3>Assess legal risks before you ask salary history<\/h3>\n<p>Hiring nurses is hard enough. But keeping them is even more challenging, especially if they feel unfairly compensated.<\/p>\n<p>Although it might be tempting to ask a nurse about previous salary history during the interview, it\u2019s a risky maneuver with potential legal issues, McCormac said.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt is now illegal in a number of states and there\u2019s a fine if you ask (salary history),&#8221; she said. &#8220;In 2017 it was banned in California. You cannot ask what someone makes. It\u2019s a labor code violation to ask (under) Labor Code 1197.5. If you\u2019re a recruiter repetitively asking the question those fines can add up.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Granted, it\u2019s legal if a job candidate voluntarily shares his or her previous income history, McCormac said. Sometimes candidates want employers to know they understand what a job title with their experience should earn, and they expect to receive fair compensation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/contact-blog\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11442 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Nursecom_MediaKit_B2B_April2019_1000x250_V1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nurse.com\/solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Nursecom_MediaKit_B2B_April2019_1000x250_V1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.nurse.com\/solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Nursecom_MediaKit_B2B_April2019_1000x250_V1-300x75.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nurse.com\/solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Nursecom_MediaKit_B2B_April2019_1000x250_V1-768x192.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.nurse.com\/solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Nursecom_MediaKit_B2B_April2019_1000x250_V1-200x50.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.nurse.com\/solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Nursecom_MediaKit_B2B_April2019_1000x250_V1-400x100.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.nurse.com\/solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Nursecom_MediaKit_B2B_April2019_1000x250_V1-600x150.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.nurse.com\/solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Nursecom_MediaKit_B2B_April2019_1000x250_V1-800x200.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Credentials help narrow nurse pay gap<\/h3>\n<p>Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN, CEO at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nln.org\/about\/who's-who-at-the-nln\/management-team-bios\/beverly-malone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National League for Nursing<\/a> in Washington, D.C., said the gender pay gap continues because we live in a culture where men fight for the pay they think they deserve.<\/p>\n<p>They also negotiate for better pay compared to women, she said. It\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/blog\/negotiating-salary-could-help-close-nursing-wage-gap\/\">time for female nurses, and females in general, to ask for more competitive wages.<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAt the bedside, it can be a $7,000 pay difference, between women and men, but executive nurses tend to make pretty good money,\u201d Malone said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>She said men also bring home more pay because society places a higher value on men and their need for higher earnings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s also an expectation that we don\u2019t need it as much as men,\u201d Malone said. \u201cIt\u2019s the old idea that men need more money to run their family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Because of the nursing shortage, nurses are highly valued, but those with higher education and additional certifications are in even greater demand.<\/p>\n<p>Our Nurse.com survey found that <a href=\"http:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/blog\/nurse-com-releases-nursing-salary-research-report\/\">earning certification helped women close the gender pay gap in nursing <\/a>to about $1,000 instead of about $6,000 less per year.<\/p>\n<p>Malone said it would be helpful if hospitals used that to their advantage when offering benefits to nurse candidates in line for the job.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The other advantage of qualified nurses? Patients receive the care benefit from well-educated nurses, Malone added.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIf I were a nurse recruiter,\u201d Malone said, \u201cI\u2019d say, \u2018Come to my hospital and I will make sure you get that certification and education you need and make sure you move into a new level of need. We will make sure we up your qualifications because it will help the institution where you work and will also help your career.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/contact-blog\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3328 size-full\"
