It\u2019s an employees\u2019 market for nurses today.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Job_perks.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium 3466 alignright\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Job_perks-300x156.jpg\" alt=\"job perks\" width=\"300\" height=\"156\" \/><\/a>The massive nursing shortage is to blame for the competitive hiring tactics healthcare organizations use, said Blake J. Thiess, PHR, SHRM-CP, director of talent acquisition at Prestige Care in Portland, Ore.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe\u2019re just at the entry point to the massive nursing shortage,\u201d Thiess said. \u201cI foresee there will be more extreme measures taken by companies to attract and retain labor in this highly hyper competitive climate.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A report from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bhw.hrsa.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/bhw\/nchwa\/projections\/NCHWA_HRSA_Nursing_Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">U.S. Department of Health and Human Services<\/a> in Rockville, Md., analyzed supply and demand in the nursing profession from 2014 to 2030.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNursing is the single largest profession in the entire U.S. healthcare workforce with RNs and LPNs making up the two largest occupations in this profession,\u201d the report stated.<\/p>\n<p>Employment of registered nurses is projected to grow 15% from 2016 to 2026, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/ooh\/healthcare\/registered-nurses.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/a>. To fill the nursing shortage, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/careeroutlook\/2018\/article\/bachelors-degree-outlook.htm#Healthcare%20and%20science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BLS<\/a> estimates projected openings for\u00a0registered nurses at an average of more than 200,000 each year from 2016 to 2026.<\/p>\n<h3>Some of the job perks nurses desire<\/h3>\n<p>Find out what some organizations are willing to give and what nurses want, according to the experts.<\/p>\n<h3>#1 \u2014 Reputation matters<\/h3>\n<p>Where you work says a lot about you and can be classified among job perks.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s just the thing <a href=\"http:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/blog\/magnet-status-can-attract-top-talent\/\">Magnet hospitals<\/a> and other prestigious healthcare facilities want their nursing staff to remember instead of offering extra job perks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUniversity of Kentucky doesn\u2019t offer <a href=\"http:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/blog\/reel-top-talent-signing-bonus\/\">sign-on bonuses<\/a> or housing,\u201d said Lois Lewis, MSN, RN, nurse recruiter at University of Kentucky Health Care in Lexington. \u201cWhat brings people to our medical center is that it\u2019s a level one trauma center with excellent benefits. And it\u2019s because of our reputation. At a level one trauma center, you get the best trained physicians, surgeons and nurses. We are the premier health system of Kentucky and we are the flagship university.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>#2 \u2014 Housekeeping<\/h3>\n<p>At the end of a shift, it would be nice to come home to a sparkling clean home. Most people won\u2019t argue that point, and that\u2019s why some job offers come with some clever value-added services or job perks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the marketplace in Portland metro and the Pacific Northwest, I\u2019ve seen companies offer housekeeping services for 12 months,\u201d Thiess said.<\/p>\n<h3>#3 \u2014 Flexible scheduling<\/h3>\n<p>Indeed\u00a0conducted a survey to assess what nurses actually want from their employers.<\/p>\n<p>The 2018 survey reached 1,050 nursing job seekers in the U.S. and showed many respondents prioritize flexibility and work-life balance over <a href=\"http:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/blog\/nurse-com-releases-nursing-salary-research-report\/\">salary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>#4 \u2014 Time off<\/h3>\n<p>When nurses take a job at University of Kentucky, they are pleasantly surprised by the generous amount of time off they receive as a perk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNurses start out with three weeks of vacation time,\u201d Lewis said. &#8220;Plus, they accrue two weeks sick time. They have to accrue it and it usually happens within about the year.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>#5 \u2014 Help paying for school<\/h3>\n<p>Many nurses care about expanding their knowledge and expertise through lifelong learning. If that\u2019s the type of nurse you want to hire, consider <a href=\"http:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/blog\/tuition-reimbursement-could-be-key-attract-and-retain-fresh-rn-talent\/\">offering tuition reimbursement or loan forgiveness <\/a>among their job perks.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe offer employee tuition assistance,\u201d Lewis said. We pay up to six credit hours per semester. When nurses hire in with an associate degree, these RNs must get their BSN within five years of their hire date.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Thiess said his organization is considering creating a loan forgiveness and tuition reimbursement program because they understand its value to nurses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNurses, especially recent grads want help getting through school,\u201d Thiess said. \u201cA company will pay up to $5,250 per year in loan forgiveness, and the tax burden is not on the receiver.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>#6 \u2014 Flashy ride<\/h3>\n<p>Job perks can go beyond education and flexibility. One hospital in Kentucky went as far as offering a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2017\/09\/13\/nurses-shortage-hiring-incentives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ford Mustang<\/a>, Lewis said.<\/p>\n<p>But why the Mustang? The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2017\/01\/17\/ford-unveils-2018-mustang-look-whos-buying-it-now.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">muscle car demographic <\/a>apparently stretches beyond the typical \u201cyoung male.\u201d Based on Ford sales, the automaker reports the Mustang attracts millennials and Hispanic Americans. Plus, it draws an international presence.<\/p>\n<p>This exemplifies a <a href=\"http:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/blog\/make-employer-branding-part-of-your-recruitment-strategy\/\">hospital identifying a brand<\/a> with a group of people they want to attract and hire.<\/p>\n<p>But here\u2019s a simple way to find out what a nurse wants.
