In a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29047163\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">study\u00a0of hospital-based nurses,<\/a> researchers linked job stress to intention to leave the hospital, which preceded intention to leave the profession.<\/p>\n<p>To put workplace violence in the spotlight, the American Hospital Association designated June 8 as Hospitals Against Violence Hope (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aha.org\/hospitals-against-violence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#HAVhope<\/a>) Friday. The day is meant to encourage hospitals, health systems, nurses, physicians and other healthcare professionals, as well as local and national organizations, to unite and combat violence through the use of digital media.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Fourteen percent of the more than 4,500 nurses surveyed in <a href=\"http:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/Nursing_Salary_Research_Report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nurse.com&#8217;s latest salary survey report <\/a>indicated they\u2019re considering leaving the profession. Baby boomers were the most likely of the generations to exit nursing, most likely to retire. But millennials and Generation X were only 4% less likely than the older generation to consider saying goodbye to nursing.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Those findings, according to the report, send a clear message that employers and others need to find out why nurses are leaving their jobs and might be considering leaving the profession. They then need to address those issues to retain nurses in the workforce.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/contact-blog\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11442 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Nursecom_MediaKit_B2B_April2019_1000x250_V1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nurse.com\/solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Nursecom_MediaKit_B2B_April2019_1000x250_V1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.nurse.com\/solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Nursecom_MediaKit_B2B_April2019_1000x250_V1-300x75.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nurse.com\/solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Nursecom_MediaKit_B2B_April2019_1000x250_V1-768x192.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.nurse.com\/solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Nursecom_MediaKit_B2B_April2019_1000x250_V1-200x50.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.nurse.com\/solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Nursecom_MediaKit_B2B_April2019_1000x250_V1-400x100.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.nurse.com\/solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Nursecom_MediaKit_B2B_April2019_1000x250_V1-600x150.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.nurse.com\/solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Nursecom_MediaKit_B2B_April2019_1000x250_V1-800x200.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Workplace violence and bullying contribute to nursing turnover<\/h3>\n<p>Among the issues that impact nurses\u2019 decision to leave are two big stressors: <a href=\"https:\/\/resources.nurse.com\/prevent-work-place-violence-in-nursing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">workplace violence and bullying<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>About three-quarters of workplace assaults reported each year occurred in healthcare and social service settings, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jointcommission.org\/assets\/1\/18\/SEA_59_Workplace_violence_4_13_18_FINAL.pdf\">The Joint Commission\u2019s Sentinel Event Alert<\/a> published April 17, 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The alert makes specific recommendations for preventing and dealing with workplace violence in healthcare settings. Those start with clearly defining workplace violence and putting systems into place that allow staff to report workplace violence experiences.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/resources.nurse.com\/workplace-violence-recognize-and-prevent-bullying\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bullying behavior is at epidemic levels in environments where nurses provide care<\/a>, according to the June 2016 Quick Safety newsletter published by The Joint Commission titled, \u201cBullying has no place in healthcare.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cA recent Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) report on workplace violence in healthcare highlights the magnitude of the problem: while 21% of registered nurses and nursing students reported being physically assaulted, over 50% were verbally abused (a category that included bullying) in a 12-month period. In addition, 12% of emergency nurses experienced physical violence, and 59% experienced verbal abuse during a seven-day period,\u201d according to The Joint Commission.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Workplace bullying, also called lateral or horizontal violence, takes many forms, from verbal abuse and intimidation to humiliation and sabotage. Among the solutions to decrease bullying in healthcare facilities: Establish a safety system and culture that does not tolerate bullying behaviors and make this a core value of all leaders in the organization, the newsletter states.<\/p>\n<h3>Why nurses leave the profession and how to address those issues<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2601\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2601\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Ginger_Hanson.jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium 2601\" src=\"https:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Ginger_Hanson.jpg-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Workplace violence\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2601\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Ginger C. Hanson, PhD<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The stressful, demanding nature of nursing can result in nurses leaving the profession, said <a href=\"https:\/\/nursing.jhu.edu\/faculty_research\/faculty\/faculty-directory\/community-publichealth\/ginger-hanson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ginger C. Hanson, PhD<\/a>, assistant professor of community public health nursing at Johns Hopkins School of Nursing.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cNurses have a variety of options to work in jobs with better benefits outside the hospital or nursing home setting,\u201d she said. \u201cWe know that many trained nurses \u2014 more than 30% \u2014 have left nursing to work in other occupations, citing the stressful work environment and burnout as the primary reason.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>One employer focused on reducing workplace violence is RWJ Barnabas Health System, said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/nancy-holecek-18753617\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nancy E. Holecek, MAS, MHA, BSN, RN<\/a>, senior vice president and chief nursing officer for health system\u2019s Northern New Jersey region.<\/p>\n<p>The numbers of nurses experiencing workplace violence might be higher than reported because nurses are among the healthcare workers who tend to under report workplace violence. That\u2019s because they might see it as part of the job, Holecek said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo that end, we are working on creating more awareness among our healthcare workers that <a href=\"https:\/\/resources.nurse.com\/prevent-work-place-violence-in-nursing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">workplace violence should not be tolerated<\/a>, and it\u2019s something that we need to report, so we can trend it, and we can respond to the trends that we uncover,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The health system has formed a committee charged with minimizing risks of threats or violence. To help keep staff and patients safe, RWJ Barnabas Health System conducts walk-throughs of facility interiors and exteriors to make sure security cameras are up to date, entry points are properly guarded, visitor access systems are updated and more.<\/p>\n<p>Staff, including nurses, are educated in <a href=\"https:\/\/resources.nurse.com\/workplace-violence-resolve-conflict-on-the-job\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ways to de-escalate threatening, physically assaulting or violent patients, family members, coworkers and others<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2599\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2599\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Nancy_Holocek_.jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium 2599\" src=\"https:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Nancy_Holocek_.jpg-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"MAS, MHA, BSN, RN\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2599\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Nancy Holocek, MAS, MHA, BSN, RN<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, in the hospital environment, people often make excuses for patients\u2019 behavior, but we really do have a responsibility to make sure we identify the violent or aggressive behavior, report it and trend it,\u201d Holecek said. \u201cWe\u2019ve installed an icon on our computer system,\u00a0which makes it very easy for staff to report potential or actual workplace violence. They just have to go on the computer, hit the icon and enter their reports.
