{"id":11255,"date":"2018-05-02T23:09:00","date_gmt":"2018-05-03T06:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nursemk.wpengine.com\/nurses-expect-speed-when-ready-to-change-jobs\/"},"modified":"2022-03-02T15:43:19","modified_gmt":"2022-03-02T20:43:19","slug":"nurses-expect-speed-when-ready-to-change-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nurse.com\/solutions\/blog\/nurses-expect-speed-when-ready-to-change-jobs","title":{"rendered":"Nurses Expect Speed When They Are Ready To Change Jobs"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Nurses looking for a new job want to make the switch to a new position fast, according to a <a href=\"http:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/Nursing_Salary_Research_Report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recent Nurse.com salary survey<\/a>.<\/h2>\n<p>The survey found 78% of nurses actively looking to change jobs prefer to do so quickly. Nearly half want a new job within three months or less. About one-third of nurses hope to land a new position within six months.<\/p>\n<p>What does this fast turnaround time mean for nurse recruiters and human resource professionals?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cRecruiters need to have their <a href=\"http:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/how\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">strategies in place<\/a> so they can move quickly to capture the nurses they need and who they are trying to recruit with the recruitment processes they are practicing,\u201d said Mattia Gilmartin, PhD, RN, executive director at <a href=\"https:\/\/nicheprogram.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE)<\/a> at the Rory Meyers College of Nursing at New York University.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>With 65% of all nurses responding to the Nurse.com salary survey saying they are open to changing employers, finding ways to recruit and hire nurses in a timely manner is a good strategy to capture the candidates who appear to be the best fit for one\u2019s organization, Gilmartin said.<\/p>\n<p>There are regional differences in the U.S. regarding the supply and demand for nurses, Gilmartin added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re a nurse in an area where nurses are scarce, you can move more easily and quickly from one job to another,\u201d she said. \u201cIf you\u2019re living in an area where there are more nurses, it may take more time to switch jobs, as the pool of candidates for recruiters to choose from is larger.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Why do nurses want to change jobs so quickly?<\/h3>\n<p>Two larger questions related to these numbers are why are so many nurses wanting to change jobs and why so quickly?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs an organization or a nurse manager, <a href=\"http:\/\/advertise.nurse.com\/blog\/what-nurses-need-for-job-satisfaction-may-depend-on-their-generation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">if you want to keep your nursing staff and don\u2019t want them to leave, you need to do something about that<\/a>,\u201d said Christine Tassone Kovner, PhD, RN, FAAN, a\u00a0Mathy Mezey professor of geriatric nursing and researcher at the <a href=\"https:\/\/nursing.nyu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rory Meyers College of Nursing at New York University<\/a>. \u201cIf your staff are unhappy, you need to find out why, counsel them and work to find a career path within the organization so they won\u2019t want to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kovner pointed out some nurses have predetermined timeframes for how long they want to stay in their jobs. There is not much an employer can do to make this group of nurses stay.<\/p>\n<p>Some examples include a nurse who only wants to stay one year before she begins a master\u2019s program or only work for two years in one location because of a planned family move to another state, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecruiters, managers and human resource people will find that in these situations, there is not much they can do to keep nurses in their jobs when they have plans in place for when they want to resign,\u201d Kovner said. \u201cHowever, for nurses who don\u2019t fall under these types of situations, employers need to find out why their nurses want to leave their jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Learn how shock theory plays into turnover for jobs<\/h3>\n<p>The Nurse.com salary survey results showing many nurses want to leave their jobs \u2013 and want to leave them fast \u2013 can be a direct result of shock theory in play, Kovner said.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cShock theory is a well-known theory that discusses the impetus behind employee turnover across many occupations, including nursing, as based on the idea that an unusual, unpleasant or shocking event can many times precipitate the feeling and attitude of, \u2018I want out of here,\u2019\u201d Kovner said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Kovner said some examples include having a baby, getting married, preparing for a partner\u2019s unexpected job transfer or suffering an injury of some kind sustained either on the job or off, such as a back injury.<\/p>\n<p>Those precipitating event examples can provide the impetus for nurses to wish to leave their jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Another big reason many nurses want to leave their jobs relates to poor quality managers, Kovner said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany times, excellent clinicians are promoted to management positions,\u201d Kovner said. \u201cGood clinicians are not always the best managers.
