Research Nurse, Neurosurgical Center

Oceanside New York

Mount Sinai Header_060420

The Chiari/EDS Neurosurgical Center at MSSN is at the forefront of treating complex Neurosurgical patients. We are one of the only surgical practices in the country that specializes in craniocervical manifestations of connective tissue disorders, a group of severely debilitating disorders with complex and often incompletely understood clinical presentations.  We have pioneered a rigorous diagnostic process that is unique in the field, and developed surgical techniques that have significantly reduced complications and improved patient outcomes.

The perceived prevalence of this disease process is increasing, driving a rise in academic interest. Currently, there is a paucity of high-quality published research on neurosurgical conditions and interventions for this patient population. We are looking for a top-notch Research RN to help us change that, and to shape the direction of the field going forward. This is an exciting opportunity to establish deep expertise in a fast-growing field, and undertake clinical research that has the potential to impact millions of patients. Role description, primary duties, and desired qualifications are below.

Role description

The research position will last for three years. The Research RN will begin with an immersion with one of the Center’s clinicians, to become familiar with the field and the Center’s data. The Center has a proposal for the first year’s research agenda, which draws primarily on its existing data. After the immersion, the Research RN will cooperate with the PhD in refining that proposal, executing the research, and defining the research agenda for subsequent years. For success in this role, the specific focus of the candidate’s scientific background is less important than the qualifications listed below; there is no particular subspecialty that we are seeking. While the successful candidate will be expected to spend some time in New York City, relocation to the New York area may not be required.

  • The main duty is to form a Research Team along with the PhD, helping him/her collecting, organizing, and analyzing clinical data for applied research, with the overall purpose of communicating and bettering the activity of the Center
  • As needed, write proposals and scientific grants for foundations, NIH, other government agencies, or other potential large donors
  • Maintain a high level of relevant expertise through familiarity with scientific literature
  • Collaborate with other research groups and/or clinical practices, as relevant

  • RN or NP degree
  • Minimum of two (2) years of research experience in a research organization, university, or clinical setting
  • High level of comfort with a range of data analysis techniques
  • Proficiency in data collection
  • Good personal interaction, to facilitate gathering of information from patients
  • Good spoken and written communication skills
  • Willingness to challenge conventional thinking, and to adjust own thinking as needed
  • A creative approach to problem-solving
  • Ability to establish strong professional relationships and collaborations
