Texas Oncology is looking for a Nurse Navigator to join our team! This position is for the Center for Proton Therapy located in Irving, Texas, one of the 220+ sites we have across the state of Texas and southeastern Oklahoma. The ideal candidate for the Nurse Navigator will have the following background and experience:
  • Requires a bachelor s degree in related field and a minimum five (5) years of experience in a clinical setting assisting patients with locating resources, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One year of supervisory or lead experience strongly preferred.
  • OCN certification preferred.
  • Current CPR certification required.
  • Must maintain continuing education requirements to maintain licensure.
  • Business Experience Knowledge of environment and systems in which patients receive care.
  • Knowledge of resources to meet patient needs, taking into consideration health literacy, culture, language and amount of information desired.
  • Specialized Knowledge/Skills Oncology experience highly preferred

What does the Nurse Navigator do?

The Nurse Navigator Team Lead acts as a clinical expert and resource liaison to ensure quality of care. The Patient Care Team Lead provides coordination and oversight of the Nurse Navigators and Patient Care Coordinators, as assigned. Responsible for leading, supporting, and coordinating the care team that assists patients in anticipating, identifying and overcoming barriers within the health care system. Collaborates with Physicians, Advanced Practice Providers and other team members to coordinate resource allocation, clinical care, customer service, process improvement and communication, ultimately promoting excellence in patient care.

The essential duties and responsibilities:
  • Assists in overseeing the operations for Nurse Navigator and Patient Care Coordinator activities, as directed by the Practice Manager. Assists in providing staff training and in-service instruction.
  • Leads assessment of, and solutions to, barriers to care, engaging patients, families, team members as appropriate.
  • Advises Nurse Navigators and Patient Care Coordinators on the resolution to non-routine & complex issues.
  • Assists with the review and revision of policies and procedures related to patient navigation of the care system.
  • Identify appropriate and credible resources responsive to patient needs taking into consideration health literacy, culture, language and amount of information desired.
  • Educates patients and caregivers on the multi-disciplinary nature of cancer treatment, the roles of team members and what to expect from the health care system.
  • Assists patients in accessing cancer care and navigating health care systems. This will include the coordination of retrieving records and other appointments with consulting providers, social workers, dietitians, laboratory work, diagnostic testing, and financial counselors along with others that may be deemed appropriate by the physician.
  • Assists in annual performance evaluations of nursing and clinical staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
