  • Performs and documents psychiatric diagnostic evaluations and follow up medication management appointments.
  • Performs and documents suicide risk assessments and completes suicide safety plans.
  • Develops treatment plans for mental health and substance use disorders.
  • Initiates health promotion and disease prevention activities including health education and counseling and the use of prescribed treatments.
  • Orders diagnostics studies, such as laboratory tests, radiological exams, EKGs, etc. pertinent to the treatment of psychiatric disorders
  • Initiates requests for consults, prosthetics, and non-medical treatments for the treatment of psychiatric disorders.
  • Prescribes psychiatric medications and monitors them appropriately
  • Conducts individual psychotherapy.
  • Admits patients to .Mental Health Residential Rehab Program (MHRRTP) and provides psychiatric consultation during their admission.
  • Participates in clinical research.
  • Preceptor for Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant students.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Work Schedule: Permanent, Full-time, Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM. Weekends as needed. Will be discussed further in the interview process.
Financial Discloser Report: Not required.Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. Mechanical patient lifts are provided. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency: I am proficient in spoken and written English (nurses appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407 (d).
  • Nurse Practitioners in the Department of Veterans Affairs must possess a master's degree from a program accredited by the ACEN or CCNE.
  • Education: Graduate of a school of professional nursing school approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant. (1) The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or (2) The Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6).
  • Licensure/Certification: A Nurse Practitioner in the Department of Veteran Affairs must have a current, full, active, and unrestricted license/registration as a professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (e.g., Puerto Rico) of the U.S. or in the District of Columbia for the specialty in which applying in addition to having a National Nurse Practitioner Certification.
  • Physical Examination: The position requires successful completion of a physical examination and random drug testing.

Grade Determinations: Applicant's education and experience will be reviewed by a Professional Standards Board and utilized in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected. The recommended salary may be at any point in the range listed for this vacancy.
