The staff nurse functions as an integral member of the Ambulatory Care team to provide care for patients with a wide spectrum of medical conditions using current evidence-based practice for patient care guidelines, standards, and treatment modalities. The incumbent will be expected to assist in coordination and facilitate the day-to-day operations of the Surgical Specialty Clinics. The Specialty Clinics RN is responsible for overseeing the daily operation of the designated clinic area. The RN will be expected to assist with clinic procedures and treatments, including pre-assessment and post-procedural care, telephone/unscheduled triage and is responsible for care management, managing clinical programs, and coordinating care within the Surgical Specialty department, inpatient, throughout the facility, including outside consultations and coordination of Fee services and the Veteran's Choice Program. The RN will be expected to participate in professional development activities. The RN will provide support staffing in the Surgical Specialty Clinics and will be expected to cover all subspecialties based on staffing needs.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8-hour shifts. Due to potential clinical expansion, weekends may be necessary. Scheduling flexibility required for early and late clinic coverage.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

Preferred Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • Three (3) years recent acute care clinical nursing.
  • Demonstration of a high degree of personal and professional accountability, maturity, stability and the ability to be self-directed, function independently and work effectively with others at all levels in the organization.
  • Demonstration of the ability to communicate effectively and efficiently coordinate patient care activities with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstration of excellent customer relations skills in previous assignments.
  • Demonstrated skills in problem-solving, applying critical thinking skills, flexibility, and resolving conflict.
  • Demonstration of involvement in performance improvement activities and a willingness to initiate and participate in unit-based/service-based quality improvement initiatives to improve patient care and customer satisfaction.
  • Possess basic computer knowledge and skills with proficiency in preparing reports/documents
  • Prior Ambulatory Care, Medical Surgical Inpatient Care, Surgical and/or Intensive Care experience.

Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.
  • If a current VA employee is selected, he/she will be reassigned at their grade and step.

Physical Requirements: Near vision correctable at 13" to 16"; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/25 or better. Ability to distinguish shades of color is not required but would be beneficial. Incumbent will sit, type, walk and talk with staff, manage databases. S/He should be able to carry 20 lbs for long distances in extreme heat on an intermittent basis. The physical requirements of this position include lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing (steps, ladder, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive), repetitive motion and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, keyboarding, reading and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be the need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness and hazardous materials.None
