Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Educates patients about preventative care and prescribes treatments.
  • Conducts physicals assessments, order tests and serve as a patient's primary healthcare provider.
  • Serves as a NP for a variety of specialty treatment programs within Mental Health Service or Surgical Service.
  • Leads and organizes delivery of care to assure continuity of care and peer accountability for practice, including access to care and discharge planning.
  • Uses advanced clinical knowledge/judgment to promote staff involvement in planning, decision-making, and evaluating outcomes.
  • Functions as an expert in clinical practice and/or areas related to the assigned roles and responsibilities.
  • Evaluates current practice, and formulates outcomes for groups of patients and/or organizational processes within an area of expertise.
  • Guides, develops, and support staff from a leadership perspective.
  • The APRN can be assigned to BHIP teams, Emergency Department, Mental health Clinic, Inpatient Mental Health Unit, Residential Unit, telemental health, as well as the suboxone clinic or;
  • The NP can be assigned to Surgical Service.

Work Schedule: Full-Time, Monday - Friday; Various Shifts to assure appropriate coverage, may include weekends and holiday hours.

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

Preferred Experience: 3-5 years of experience in Mental Health. (a) Will possess current certification as an Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) or Adult Nurse Practitioner (ANP) in Acute Care from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP); possess current clinical competencies as defined by the FHCC; and meet VA professional and physical requirements as set forth in the Nurse Qualification Standard, VA Handbook 5005/27, Part II, Appendix G6. In addition, the preferred Nurse Practitioner must possess a master's degree from a graduate school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State accrediting agency and accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and (c) possess ANCC Board Certification in Mental Health as appropriate for area of practice. Have a minimum of 2 years of experience as an Advance Practice Nurse, and full, active, unrestricted licensure as an Advance Practice Registered Nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e. Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.

Physical Requirements: To perform in a fully successful manner, the individual must have the physical ability to perform job related duties which require lifting, standing, bending, transferring, stooping, stretching, walking, pushing, or pulling without assistance from another patient care provider or significant other. A health examination must be successfully completed prior to this assignment and periodically thereafter as required by the Employee Health Clinic policy. There will be intermittent exposure to blood and body fluids.None
