Handles all duties of a medical, technical and/or administrative nature, including histories and physicals, pre, intra and post-op care, as requested by his/her supervising attending/resident on the service. Physician Assistant will be seeing all outpatients, assisting in procedures as needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Takes patient histories and performs physical examinations.
  • Reports results of all clinical and diagnostic findings to supervising physician and, with him/her, communicates results of medical examination to patients.
  • Formulates appropriate diagnostic and treatment plans, writes appropriate orders.
  • Performs procedures on patients as appropriate (e.g., blood draws, IV placement, suturing).
  • Documents all diagnoses, procedures, treatments, and other relevant information in patient's chart.
  • With approval of supervising physician, orders diagnostic and laboratory tests; retrieves results and reports them to supervising physician, then contacts patient (usually by telephone) with instructions based on results.
  • Carries out pre-operative workups and attends to post-operative management and care of patient.
  • Assists physician in operating room (e.g., clamps, retracts, provides suction, packs wound, exposes field).
  • Changes surgical dressings.
  • Performs minor suturing (after certification by Department Chairman or his designee).
  • Write orders based on consultation with the Attending or Housestaff Officer. These orders will be countersigned within 24hrs. In writing such orders, the P.A. will record the source of such instructions.
  • Attends and participates in daily rounds independently or with surgical attending physician and/or students.
  • Notifies appropriate medical staff of any unusual or unexpected events or problems requiring direct physician consultation.
  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • Patient care responsibilities are delivered with a knowledge of patient growth and development and are appropriate to the ages of the patients served.

Qualifications:
BASIC COMPETENCIES

Education:

Graduation from an approved Physician Assistant Program; current NYS PA registration.

Must attain 50 hours/year of CED.

Experience:

1 year of experience in the area of assignment preferred.

Skills:

Clinical and technical skills required to perform the described functions.

Good oral and written communication skills.

Good interpersonal skills.

Speaks, reads and writes English to the extent required by the position.
