General Summary

Under general supervision provides radiation therapy to patients as prescribed by physician according to established standards and practices. Coordinate and direct the daily work activities of Radiation Therapists. Supervise and instruct students.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

  • Oversees, directs and instructs Radiation Therapists in the daily administration of radiation therapy.
  • Assists the Radiation Therapy Chief and Assistant Chief in the preparation of work schedules to assure appropriate coverage. Assigns and reassigns personnel as necessary. Provides feedback for employee performance reviews and makes recommendations for merit increases, promotions, and disciplinary actions, as appropriate. Instructs and supervises radiation therapy students.
  • Assists with orientation, supervision, and training of technical staff to ensure competence of the functionality of all therapy related equipment. Teach staff therapists any new and innovative methods of treatment and routine techniques used by the department. Provide clinical instructions, guidance and demonstration of skills in the evaluation and treatment of patients to Radiation Therapy.
  • Offers technical guidance and counseling regarding complicated or problematic radiation therapy issues, patient scheduling problems or difficulties with equipment.
  • Assists in communicating, enforcing and maintaining established department policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control.
  • Coordinates and oversees the delivery of a prescribed and planned course of radiation therapy to patients as per physician instruction, in accordance with generally accepted radiation therapy practices and departmental procedures.
  • Oversees the check film procedure for all treated areas and shows these to physicians. Changes therapy as ordered.
  • Checks prescription, diagnosis, chart, patient identification and other relevant information. Schedules patients and explains procedure, including pre- and post-treatment. Answers questions and reassures patient prior to procedure.
  • Interfaces with physicist, planning and mold technicians at initiation of treatment. Works in consultation with supportive care physicians, nurses and social workers in implementing therapy plan.
  • Prepares molds, beam shaping and immobilization devices for routine treatments. Assist in dosimetry (measurements) procedures.
  • Prepares room and equipment for patient according to the prescription, including placement of immobilization devices, setting of field size, setting of treatment devices, parameters, distance, lead (Pb), protection devices. Checks equipment operation regularly to ensure delivery of accurate dose rate at all times with the assistance of the Physicists.
  • Transfers patient to treatment table with care for I.V.'s and catheters. Maintains visual and/or audible contact with patient during treatment. Checks daily patient treatment schedule and delivers prescribed dose. Maintains patient markings and changes according to physician's direction. Documents treatment, blood count and other lab reports in accordance with departmental protocols. Keeps physician informed. Changes therapy as ordered. Takes and checks films of all treated areas; processes and files same. Observes radiation safety measures for patient and personnel.
  • Ensure charges to patients for services rendered are accurately recorded to eliminate and correct errors. Performs/oversees weekly billing audits for the purposes of education and training.
  • Observes patient during therapy procedure for any unusual reactions or events; uses judgement and withholds treatment if indicated by patient's condition. Reports significant or questionable information to designated supervisory personnel and assists in emergency treatment as appropriate.
  • Reinforces recommendations given to the patient by the physician, dietitian, and other relevant health care personnel concerning reaction to treatment and care of the radiated area (dressings, hygiene, etc.), prevention or treatment of generalized and local side effects. Changes patient dressings as necessary.
  • Assists with the maintenance of department facilities, equipment, and supplies. Maintains stock levels of supplies and materials; assists the supervisor with purchasing and storage as needed. Report maintenance and repair needs to supervisor.
  • Prepares beam therapy equipment for patient treatment; checks beam direction and protective devices (calibrate, temperature, barometric), heavy and dangerous equipment. Keep records of these and report erratic operation to the Biomedical Equipment Technician, Medical Radiation Physicist or other designated personnel.
  • Participates in quality assurance monitoring by verifying treatment rendered vs prescribed. Confirms that all treatments were given in the designated time period.
  • Ensure the work areas are kept in an orderly, clean and sanitized manner.
  • Maintains records, reports, and files as required. Collects various statistics as directed for quality assurance reporting or other significant data for reporting purposes.
  • Attends in-service and departmental meetings as required. Participates on committees as directed.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through attendance and participation in in-service meetings, educational programs, workshops, conferences, and keeps current with relevant literature.
  • Assists Chief and Assistant Chief in interview of applicants.
  • What You Need to Be Successful:

    Education and Experience

  • Graduation from an AMA approved program in Radiation Therapy Technology or Radiologic Technology is required. An Associate of Science degree in Radiation Therapy Technology is preferred.
  • Registration as a Radiation Therapy Technologist by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) is required.
  • Licensure as a Radiation Therapy Technologist by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology in the state of Maryland is required.
  • Three years of clinical practice in Radiation Therapy is required.
