General Summary
Under general supervision provides leadership, expertise and oversight of new graduate registered nurses orientation and enculturation into the University of Maryland Medical Center (University and Midtown campuses). Develops and refines programs for the new graduate registered nurse to assure stability during the orientation process and continued engagement through the second year of service to the organization.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Participates in the selection of students for the Student Nurse Residency program in collaboration with the Manager, SON Partnership Programs.
  • Provides oversight of the Nurse Residency Program (NRP) at the UMMC: University Campus.
  • In collaboration with the leadership of the Midtown campus, expands the NRP to include the Midtown campus.
  • Integrates the structures and processes of the NRP for the University and Midtown campuses
  • Assures the content of the NRP program is consistent with contemporary nursing practice
    • Assures content is engaging to the learner and promotes a spirit of inquiry consistent with the goals and objectives of an academic medical center.

  • Markets the NRP throughout the organization
  • Participates and co-leads the UM Nursing subgroup on new graduate education
  • Assures a consistent structure and process is in place to evaluate the new graduate performance during the orientation timeframe.
  • Tracks data related to the hiring and retention of new graduates by organization and unit.
    • Disseminates information to stakeholders regarding recruitment and retention of new graduates

  • Designs and implements a mentoring program for the new graduate entering his/her second year of employment.
  • Designs and implements scheduled meetings of the participants within the NRP to facilitate sharing of experiences and create a sense of team.
  • Facilitates the Graduate Nurse Advisory Council (GNAC).
  • Chair or Co-Chair of the Retention Team
  • Member of the Mentoring Team
  • Provides frequent updates, analysis and education to managers
  • What You Need to Be Successful:

    Education and Experience

  • Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) or PhD preferred, Master’s degree in nursing required.
  • Five years clinical experience in nursing required.
  • Experience in system program development and evaluation preferred.
  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland, or eligible to practice due to Compact state agreements outlined through the MD Board of Nursing required.

  • Demonstrates expert communication skills both verbally and in writing.
  • Creative with a proven record of innovation.
