What You Will Do:

University of Maryland Medical System at Baltimore Washington Medical Center is seeking an Experienced Nurse Manager (RN) to lead the Mother & Baby Unit Nursing Team!
  • Full Time, Days
  • 24x7 accountability
  • Requires: Three (3) years of progressive experience in the field of hospital nursing and proven administrative/leadership ability. At least two (2) years of progressive experience must be in the Mother & Baby specialty.

The Mother Baby Unit (MBU) consists of 18 private post partum rooms. MBU provides complete care and rooming in for newborns in bassinets. The average daily census is six couplets. The unit is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Average length of stay is two days for vaginal deliveries, three to four days for C-section patients, and varying length of stay for antepartum patients.

The major diagnoses represented by this patient population incudes:
  • Vaginal delivery or Cesarean section, formula feeding, breastfeeding or patients with intentions of breastfeeding.
  • Pregnancy complications, such as hypertension, diabetes, cardiac issues, pre-term labor, premature rupture of membranes, trauma during pregnancy, PIH, and hyperemesis.
  • Neonatal problems, such as uncomplicated sepsis, substance abuse exposure, hyperbilirubinemia are major diagnosis and the near-term infant population (35-37 weeks).

General Summary

Under limited supervision, the Nurse Manager is a Registered Nurse who is vested with 24 hour accountability for ensuring safe, effective and appropriate patient care on a designated patient care unit. The Nurse Manager serves as the link between the Hospital’s Vision and the unit. The Nurse Manager has direct access to support service resources essential to nursing and patient care, and maintains line authority over unit nursing staff, and assigned PRN, SSP and Float Pool personnel. The Nurse Manager is competent to care for all patients in the age group(s) served by her unit, as defined in the Unit Specific RN Performance Standards.
  • Responsible for the development and administration of departmental goals and objectives and their occurrence with the hospital mission, vision and goals.
  • Responsible for ensuring the delivery of high quality services to all customers, as well as meeting regulatory requirements and continually improving performance.
  • Responsible for appropriate management of resources.
  • Development and administration of annual fiscal goals, including operating and capital resources.
  • Effectively manages the human resources of the department. Includes managing staffing levels, developing staff, maintaining good communication, and promoting high employee morales.
  • Demonstrates leadership abilities consistent with the goals and values of the organization.
  • Communication skills: Utilizes appropriate customer relation skills. Discourages gossip and seeks clarification to effectively communicate accurate information. Keeps senior management abreast of pertinent information. Demonstrates responsibility for self-learning. Maintains confidentiality of patient, employee and Professionalism. Maintains professional attitude and appearance. Assumes responsibility and is accountable for own actions. Supports hospital decisions.
  • Is market and customer focused. Maintains effective relationships with the medical staff. Functions as a collaborative team member, demonstrates commitment to group goals and teamwork.
  • Manages change effectively, including being flexible and adaptive.
  • Utilizes critical thinking to identify problems proactively, and independently generates solutions/resolutions as necessary.
  • Consistently demonstrates integrity, resilience and perseverance in this leadership capacity.

Reporting Relationships

Reports to Director of Nursing – appropriate Division.

What You Need to Be Successful:

  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing, BSN degree preferred.
  • Current registration with the Maryland State Board of Nursing.
  • Three (3) years of progressive experience in the field of hospital nursing and proven administrative/leadership ability.
  • At least two (2) years of progressive experience must be in the Mother & Baby specialty.

Working Conditions

Works inside. May be exposed to body fluids. Exposed to frequent interruptions and multiple crisis situations. Potential for regular exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials, requiring the observation of Standard (Universal) Precautions and safe handling practices.

Physical Requirements

Work is heavy. Requires close attention to many details. Standing, walking, and ascending/descending stairs is required 3-5 hours/day, 0-3 hours sitting, bending, lifting and reaching required up to and in excess of one hundred (100) pounds. Requires hearing and visual acuity 5-8 hours/day.
