Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Certified Nurse Midwife.

The Certified Nurse Midwife employed by NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn as a hospitalist, is a member of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department and may function in the triage and inpatient settings. Midwives will ensure the provision and coordination of comprehensive advanced practice nursing processes and pertinent standards of care and uphold Midwifery Core Values. Licensed Midwives provide antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum care of normal and uncomplicated pregnancies. Licensed Midwives functioning as hospitalist will work in collaboration with the Attending Physician Hospitalist on duty.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Identifies typical and atypical presentations of commonly occurring health problems across the lifespan of the pregnant and postpartum woman .
  • Treats common acute and chronic illnesses and common injuries to minimize the development of complications.
  • Identifies acute exacerbations of chronic illness and intervenes appropriately.
  • Adapts interventions to meet the complex needs of pregnant patients arising from normal changes of aging, multiple system problems, psychosocial, and financial issues.
  • Provides health protection, health promotion, and disease prevention interventions/treatment strategies to improve or maintain optimum health of the pregnant and postpartum woman.
  • Assesses the impact of multilevel influences on a pregnant womans health status including family dynamics, community, environmental changes, economic, and occupational influences.
  • Performs complete health history, physical examination and psychosocial assessment of patients.
  • Triages patients with an understanding of ones own scope of practice and need for Physician collaboration.
  • Provides initial exams and ongoing assessment, diagnosis and management for low risk patients.
  • Provides initial exams and assessments for high risk patients in triage with collaborative expertise of the covering Attending physician.
  • Provides comprehensive management of the normal uncomplicated laboring patient, including triage, intrapartum care, and postpartum care.
  • Performs as OR first assist in surgical procedures, if certified.
  • Performs postpartum rounds (including C/S if first assist certified) and manages according to best practices with Attending Physician input as dictated by the clinical findings for low risk patients.
  • Orders customary laboratory, radiological and diagnostic studies per practice protocols; interprets findings and manages patient care accordingly for low risk patients.
  • Differentiates between normal/abnormal findings and follows best practices for abnormal findings, which may include establishing co-management with consulting physicians or referring patients for physician care.
  • Formulates the plan of care, involving patient, family, and, other disciplines to promote health awareness, maintain function, and optimize quality of life for both mother and fetus.
  • Evaluates treatment and health care plans for effectiveness and modifies per clinical standards and practice protocols.
  • Works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team of other midwives, nurses, physicians and other disciplines to identify, develop, and implement an appropriate plan of care that maximizes individual patient/family preference and enhances quality, safety, access, and cost-effective outcomes.
  • Assesses for multiple interactive and synergistic effects of pharmacologic agents, including over-the-counter (OTC) preparations and alternative and complementary therapies, for patients with complex, acute, critical, and chronic illnesses and collaborates with Attending Physician as dictated by the clinical findings.
  • Prescribes medications according to New York State law, including controlled substances with DEA authorization.
  • Prescribes or refers for medical equipment, devices, physical and occupational therapy, and home health services per practice protocol.
  • Identifies risk factors and behavior patterns that threatens health and well being; and educates patients and caregivers on ways to manage risk factors or modify behavior to avoid illnesses and maximize wellness.
  • Educates patient and family to facilitate and support health adjustments to new or changed health patterns.
  • Provides consultation and proper hand off about the patients therapeutic regimen to other members of the health care team.
  • Facilitates the continuity of care across the continuum of services, e.g. home care, community referrals, other facilities, appointments with other providers or specialists, etc.
  • Practices as a member of the allied health staff according to the rules and regulations of the Medical Staff and bylaws as outlined in the delineation of privileges.
  • Acts as a professional role model to all levels of staff by incorporating expertise and related experience into all aspects of patient care.
  • Incorporates patient, family, community, cultural, and developmental needs in the plan of care.
  • Ensures complete and thorough documentation in the Electronic Medical Record for all services rendered independently bills for those services.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Current license and registration as a Licensed Midwife in New York State with prescriptive privileges
  • Masters Degree in Midwifery from an accredited Midwifery Program
  • Credentialed through the Credentialing Committee of the Medical Board with approved Delineation of Privileges
  • National certification with the American Midwifery Board Certification (AMCB) is required
  • DEA certificate

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience as a Licensed Midwife is preferred;
  • Evidence of excellent interpersonal skills, effective communication skills, creative problem solving and excellent critical thinking and leadership;
  • Previously demonstrated ability to facilitate group processes and work cohesively and collaboratively as member of the interdisciplinary team;
  • Effective change agent;
  • Physical stamina, manual dexterity, visual and aural acuity to perform responsibilities;
  • Membership in related professional specialty organizations desirable;
  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring Credentialing every 2 years;
  • NRP certification every 2 years;
  • Basic Life Support certification;
  • Department Drills/Skills participation;
  • Infection Control Certification every 4 years
