Palliative Care Registered Nurse - OCN

The journey along the Cancer Care Continuum is not a sprint – it’s a marathon full of hills and valleys, twists and turns. For the patients on longer races, Compass Oncology has a specific Palliative Care team that acts as a supportive presence every step of the journey. Working closely with Dr. Angela Kalisiak, MD, Compass Oncology Medical Director, and supervisor for our Palliative Care Team. Not only would you work one on one with patients receiving palliative care at Compass, but you will work with the team to develop and grow the program, as well as connect with local patient resources. Employment Type: Part Time FTE 0.6 - 24 hours per week (3 x 8hr shifts)

Under minimal supervision, provides professional nursing care for patients following established standards and practices. Demonstrates knowledge of age specific differences in the patient population including late adolescence, adulthood, middle age, and the elderly. This includes physiological, psychological, and developmental differences unique to each group. Supports and adheres to the US Oncology Compliance Program, to include the Code of Ethics and Business Standards.


  • Liaison with "continuum of care partners" both internally and externally

  • Coordinate Palliative care with continuum of care partners under the direct supervision of the Medical Director and Supervisor of the Palliative Care team.

  • Maintain registry of active palliative care patients as a case manager

  • Conduct, document, and appropriately bill for patient visits

  • Patient/family symptom management education, particularly regarding pain management

  • Assist with developing policies and procedures for safe prescribing and other best practices for common advanced cancer symptom management in collaboration with other RN leadership, Advanced Practice Providers and pharmacy.

  • Develop and implement a patient reported outcomes process for patients and families receiving palliative care services

  • Assists physician with exams and procedures. Maintains efficient and appropriate patient flow in and out of exam rooms.

  • Documents nursing assessments, patient teaching Communicates all pertinent information and any interventions to the physician.

  • Acts as a resource person to the medical assistants.

  • Triages patient phone calls as needed and documents relevant information in the patient's chart. Assesses patient/family needs and provides teaching and other instructional material. Demonstrates awareness of community resources available to patients and assists with referrals if necessary.

  • Maintains patient confidentiality.


Experience and Education:

  • BSN degree with at least five (5) years of medical oncology experience required.

  • Current OCN certification preferred.

  • MSN and advanced clinical specialty preferred

Licenses Required:

  • Oregon State RN licensed.

  • Current CPR/BLS certification.

  • Must maintain continuing education requirements.
