Chief Nurse over Geriatrics and Extended Care - Martinez
The Chief Nurse over Geriatrics and Extended Care Service Line is accountable to the Associate Director for Patient Care Services (ADPCS) and provides oversight of strategic, clinical, operational and administrative nursing operations in the GEC SL. The Chief Nurse is responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of an organizational plan for the provision of nursing treatment and clinical services to patients in Geriatrics and Extended Care Service Line. Such a plan should create a professional practice environment that fosters excellence in clinical care, including customer satisfaction and safety. He/she utilizes organizational leadership skills to develop and mentor a highly effective diverse workforce, to improve overall Geriatrics and Extended Care Service Line operations to achieve performance measures and to support strategic planning initiatives. He/she is responsible for initiating and participating in interdisciplinary projects and committees with the aim of improving outcomes in the management of complex patient care or the systems and process of the Geriatrics, Palliative and Extended Care Service Line. The Chief Nurse demonstrates exceptional communication skills and role models transformational leadership skills. He/she provides direct supervision and oversight of the Geriatrics and Extended Care Service Line Nursing as well as other allied healthcare providers. He/she is engaged and leads all labor management relations for Geriatrics and Extended Care Service Line Nursing and other allied healthcare providers.

- Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
- The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates:
- Nurse IV - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 4-5 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and appropriate basic or advanced certification desired, and approximately 3-4 year's of nursing practice/experience.

Use and function of all normal motor and sensory anatomy for provision of patient care, reading, writing, listening, observing/seeing, heavy lifting, bending, pulling, pushing, stooping, squatting, walking, standing, use of fine motor muscles; visual and auditory acuity; emotional intelligence to respond to stressful and/or emergent situations and crises appropriately and calmly; self-care skills to maintain physical, psychological, and emotional health. Examples include: heavy lifting of 45 pounds and over, heavy carrying of 45 pounds and over, straight pulling, pushing, reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required, walking, standing, kneeling, repeated bending, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1-4, far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other.
